My family originates from Haworth, West Yorkshire. Currently I've traced back to John Fether (lost the a by then) who married Mary Holmes 8 July 1762

John Feather of Haworth, WRY

Hello Noel,

I have a few Feathers in my database. My Gr. Gr. Grandfather was John Feather (abt 1815-1870), born in either Haworth or Oxenhope. He married a Sarah Crossley (I believe) of Kildwick. As per the 1841 census, they lived in Keighley, District 12, Back Hope St. On the 1851 census it lists John and Sarah as living in District 4d, Hope Mill. It also lists son Crossley (8 yrs), William Henry (5),Mary Jane (3), Thomas(4 months) and Charlotte Fawthaugh, a servant from Halifax. I know there were other children born after this census. John was a worsted manufacturer in Keighley and employed at least 20 workers.

My grandfather George Feather was born in Oct 1851, right after the taking of the census. Other children include , Joseph (Aug 21, 1853), Frank (Mar. 26, 1859), and possibly Samuel (May 27, 1852).

Do any of these names sound familiar? I know there were a great many Feathers in that area and finding the right ones are like searching for a needle in a haystack.

If any of this is familiar, please contact me and we can swap data.

Thanks,
Bill Burchill

John Feather

In my mother's mother's family we have 2 John Feathers. The first, (must have been born before 1800) was a wool merchant in Bradford, and had several children, one son, Timothy, he had a son, also John Feather who married an Ann Rhodes (not sure of spelling), one of their daughters, Louisa Feather (b.1866) married a John Pickles of Bradford, and they later lived at Gourock, Scotland. Their son, Frank Pickles, born 1 Oct 1893 was brought up by his mother after his father had died while he was young. Frank served in the Highland Light Infantry (?south Yorkshire Division) but was invalided out after an injury to his left arm/hand (he was left-handed) he was later a reporter on the (then) Manchester Guardian. Do any of these Feathers/Pickleses fit with yours? We also have a portrait of a Smith Feather who was mayor of Bradford at some point, though I am unsure of the dates of this.

Hi,

my Feather/Fether side of the family also originates from Haworth/Oxenhope areas of Yorkshire. The farthest I have gone back is Timothy Fether b c1722 married Martha Feather b 1724 (daughter of Thomas Feather).

Thomas and Martha had 4 children, Mary, George, James and David Fether. James b 1769 married Anne Hartley b 1770.

Any connection?

Thanks

Hi John
Hopefully i might have some info for you. Smith feather was mayor of Bradford in 1890 and though i can not confirm this my father assures me at another point as well. We also have a portrait of him and his wife, who i dont know the name of. I know that one of his decendants was a Harrold Wheater/feather wheater, but past that i dont know much. Hopefully that is of interest to you. If there is any further info you can give me that would be very much appreicated
