Help needed...Rousseau in Red Cliff area.

Surnames: Rousseau, Martin, Babineau
I've been trying to locate any information on my 2nd great grandfather, Charles Rousseau, born about 1832 in Canada. By 1860 he was living in Michigan and married to Charlotte Martin (daughter of Solomon). I can't find the marriage record but census says "married." This family has been a 15 year old brick wall for me.

Charlotte was previously married to a Babineaux and had 2 kids with him: Antoine Babineau born about 1854 in Michigan and Macala Babineau born about 1860 in Michigan.

Charles and Charlotte had 4 kids:
Joseph M. Rousseau born about 1867 in Michigan
Charlotte J. Rousseau born about 1868 in Michigan
Charles Rousseau born about 1871 in Michigan
John Jonas Rousseau (my great grandfather)born May 17, 1875 in Beaver Island, Michigan. He is the only one I can find any information on.

John Jonas said he was raised on or near the Red Cliff Reservation, possibly in an orphanage but I've found no records of this anywhere. Because I can't find any death records in Michigan for the family I am beginning to think the whole Rousseau family may have moved to Red Cliff area.

I have the census records for the Rousseau family in St. Ignace, Michigan from 1860-1880 and this is where they disappear... Rousseau has been spelled Rousseaux, Reso and Russaw (John Jonas birth record has Russaw as his last name).

If anyone here can help me find this family in or near Red Cliff I would be forever grateful!!
Thank you,
Delayne

On Ancestry.com you will find that John Jonas Rosseau moved to northern Minnesota, not Red Cliff, Bayfield, Bayfield, Wisconsin. John Jonas Rousseau born 17 May 1875 in Charlevoix married 21 June 1917 in Grand Marais, Cook, Minnesota to Susan Morrison. His parents were Charles Rousseau and Charlotte Martin. He died 25 Jan 1950 in Duluth, St. Louis, Minnesota (Minnesota Death Index 1908-2002) also see U. S. World War I Draft Registration Cards 1917-1918. The 1930 and 1940 U. S. Censuses have John J. and Susan Rousseau living in Township 63N Range 6E, Cook, Minnesota. The Duluth City Directory for 1946 has John Rousseau living in Duluth, Minnesota.

Thank you for the information but I am fully aware John moved to Minnesota and his life here. From 1880 to 1900 he lived in or near the Red Cliff Reservation. I'm trying to find out if it was only him or if the entire family moved.

He told my grandma (his daughter) he was raised in Red Cliff.

Thank you,
Delayne

In 1880 John Reso, 5, lived in Hendricks, Mackinaw, Michigan. There is no 1890 Census, and like you I cannot find him on the 1900 census. Red Cliff is an Ojibwe/Chippewa reservation 2 miles from Bayfield, Wisconsin established by the Treaty of 1854. The Band was given common land, and each family received an individual allotment of land, which they could sell, and many did. Caucasians who purchased an allotment were tallied in the Bayfield Census. Ojibwe were tallied in the "U.S., Indian Census Rolls, 1885-1940" in Ancestry. The Band still maintains a roster of members of the Band, which might be of help to you. The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa maintains their website at
