Gaffney/Mcdonald

I am trying to find the birthplace(s) of Ann Gaffney and Peter Mcdonald, who married in Dundee in 1858. I believe they were both born in Ireland. Ann's parents were Henry Gaffney (labourer) and Ann Matthews. Peter's parents were James Mcdonald (labourer) and Bridget McSherry. Peter possibly came to Scotland from County Down.

Have you tried the 1861 census, which you can view online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk? Or a later census, if you know where they were around census time? In theory the census should only say 'Ireland' but sometimes the enumerators noted the county.

Depending on whether Peter and Ann arrived in Scotland with their parents, there might be something useful in the 1851 census.

I am also looking for the same birth as you and also anything on Henry Gaffney and ann Matthews.Ido know thatAnn Gaffney died in Dundee on November 20th and is buried at Eastern Cemetery in poor ground. By then she was a widow aged 27.Different documents show the year she could have been born in Ireland. Her parents died between1858 and 1872.The nephew Peter Gaffneywho she shared a house with was born in Granard Longford in March 1842 son of Patrick Gaffney and Mary Darcy or Dorsay and married a Margaret Mahady in Ireland before going to Dundee. He died in Dundee on 21st July 1903. They had at least 5 children Michael Patrick Henry Peter and Ann. I dont think I can find out about Ann asI have tried, with my limited knowledge of the internet every thing I know.

I have the same information as you except I didn't know Ann was buried in Eastern Cemetery (Dundee?). Can you tell me where you found this information? The death record shows she was 50, not 27. I found a birth record for an Ann Gaffney in Granard, Longford in 1830 but the father is Patrick and the mother Eleanor Dale. I found a birth record of Thomas McDonald, the second child of Ann and Peter and the informant was Thomas McDonald - uncle - so was probably the brother of Peter. I can't get any further information about Peter McDonald, who was my grandmother's grandfather. I'll let you know if I find out any more.
