Boy, we are close, but not of the same line. Seth A. Cates
Born Feb. 15, 1813 Avon, Me. s/o Adoniram and Mary Cates.
This is a part of my line. Adoniram was the son of Joseph
Cates Jr. and gs/o Joseph Cates Sr. of Gorham, Me. This is
the only one I know of, and I doubt it helps you any.
I know your were trying to help me and I Thank You for the
effort. We really are close.

Your query was forwarded to me by Gloria Labbee. I do not have the answer for you, but I have just started to go through different children.
If the name was Cates and not Cate, then she had to be of either
Edward Jr's line or Joseph Cate-Cates. Both men added the S to the
name. Edwards line is of Harrison, Machias, etc., of Washington
County. Joseph's line is of Gorham, Hancock Co. Then there were
Cate and Cates in Somerset Co., but not many. This would all be
of the line of James and Alice Cate of NH. James immigrated to this
country in 1635 at age 11 with his 3 brothers. It sounds as if she is
of the line of Edward Jr. Edward Sr. was known as Cate and sometimes Cates and was the son of the 1st James. I do have parts of this line only. Email me, if you have any other information
that I could use to see if I have who you are seeking. The name
Merchant is now firmiliar to me.
Good Luck

Hi Doris,
I realize this is >10 years later than the last post on this thread, but there may still be some interest.
As you pointed out in another message, there is a lineage from James Cate all the way up to Adoniram Cates (b1784), and his son Seth born Aug 5 1812 in Avon, Maine.
Tim Booth indicated that this Seth married Sarah Sally Nevins Cushman and lived in NYC until at least 1880.
In fact I think this is wrong. Seth (my Great-Great-Great Grandfather), moved to Canada, settling in Wakefield where he married Mary Link and established a Cates line in Canada. He died in 1880 and is buried in Wakefield Quebec. Several census records in Canada indicate that he was born in the USA, and we have his birth date as February 5, 1812 in Avon, ME. His headstone reads: "Died 27 Aug 1880 age 68 yrs 6 months.
Genbug5 indicated in his message that Seth Cates was born in Kent England, moved to Canada, living in Wakefield where he married Mary Link. This is clearly wrong.

It would be nice to clear up these different reports about Seth.
