Looking for any information on Elsie Hite, she is Gertrude's step sister I think. She is buried in Maple Grove Cemetary in Munising in the Leiphart family plot. I think she had a daughter named Mabel who was a silent movie star. Mabel was married to Mike Donlin a manager/player for the Giants.
If anyone has any info would love to hear it.

In response to query on Elsie, here's a thumbnail I have drawn on her daughter Mabel. I intend to use it in a book about Ashland, KY. You can find a lot about Mabel by going to Google and putting in Mabel Hite....

HITE, Mabel, actress, vaudeville singer and comedienne. Born 1885 in Ashland (or Catlettsburg) Ky., daughter of pharmacist _________ and Elsie Hite. First appearance at age 11 as Lord Chancellor in amateur performance of Iolanthe. First professional job with Dunn and Ryley’s company in A Milk-White Flag, and later, The Telephone Girl. Musical plays included A Knight for a Day and A Certain Party with her husband, New York Giant baseball star Mike Donlin, in the leading role. Her last act was Mabel Hite and Her Clowns. After being stricken by intestinal cancer, she had an operation and took up Christian Science, but died on Oct. 22, 1912 at age 27. Donlin stepped out of baseball and into movies

Thank You for your response. Mabel Hite is really not related to Gertrude (Conrad) Leiphart but thru a second marriage. Mary (Viola?) Sweet married a 2nd time to my gggrandfather Jacob Conrad bringing with her 3 children from a previous marriage. There names were Elsie, Frankie & Georgie Sweet so Elsie is my ggrandmothers step sister & Mabels mother.. The only other information on Elsie is I believe she is buried in Munising MI on the Leiphart plot in Maple Grove Cemetery. There is a grave stone for Elsie Hite. On Gertrude's death certificate her mother's name is Mary A Russell (maiden name?).

I do remember as a child going to a funeral in Michigan but not being allowed to participate. We were staying in a hotel room with my Uncle watching over us. There seemed to be some tension in the family. I have asked my mother and she believed that was the funeral for Elsie. The tension seemed to be around a painting, maybe of Mabel, as to who it would get it and I don't know who finally layed claim to it.

My grandfather, Conrad Leiphart, went to visit the Hites and was a bat boy for the giants while visiting because of Mabel & Mike Donlin as the story goes.

I would appreciate any family background you have on Mabel's family. Thanks for posting to my inquiry.

Oh, one more thing. Do you know where or how I could get my hand on any film of Mabel Hite or Mike Donlin film. I would love to see one.

Did you write your book. I am interested in Mabel Hite. You said you were writing a book about Ashland KY. What is the title and where can I purchase it.

You picked a good time to ask.. My verizon email popped back on Sunday after being out since June.
I haveyet to finish the book BUT I'd be glad to share whatever I have with you on line... I discovered a picture of Mabel Hite as a young girl, apparently still in Ashland but looking like a performer.
Tell me what you need and I'll send it to you ... no charge. GW

GW, thanks for responding. First off I will be interested in your book when you have finished so please keep my email. Do you have a title yet? Whee was Mabel born? Any info on her family? Gertrude (Conrad) Leiphart was a half sister (I believe) to Elsie Hite, Elsie and my grandmother Gertrude have the same mother which is Mary Russell (Sweet) (Conrad) married twice? or is there more. This is why I have been interested in Mabel Hite. I think I told you that Elsie was buried in MapleGrove Cemetary, Munising, MI by my ggrandmother. That is why I started this search to find out who she was to my ggrandmother.
As a child there was much family fighting over a painting of Mabel and I was so small when all this happened I don't remember seeing it. My great aunt Marguerite (Leiphart) Hill had the painting at one time, but where it went after she died I do not know. I would love to get a picture of it. I would have contacted you via your email but was not sure your email was correct on Ancestry. Thanks for responding. Let me know if you have anymore info on the Hites, as I am interested. You can email me direct if you would like.

I'm not related but just recently read a piece on George Liephart of Munising from an early Alger County Historical's newsletter. They had a nice article about how he was a master builder and of the many buildings he built that are still standing today.. Have you seen it? i think it was from 1987 or so.

Kathlene,
I have the Alger Footprints copy from Summer, 1992 that gave an extensive article on my g grandfather, George Leiphart and all the building he did. Is that the one you are talking about or is there another one that I don't know about? My grandfather Conrad Leiphart followed in his footsteps and also became the Chief Construction Examiner of Phoenix, Arizonia.
I was very lucky to get a copy as that was the only one left. My little genealogy angel must have been sitting on my shoulder when I was up in Munising for vacation.
Thanks for your post.

We may have a copy of a letter your grandfather wrote home while he was in New York for a baseball game and staying with Mabel and Mike. I vaguley remeber something about a portrait as well--but only through family talk. I do have some pictures of Mabel and Mike
