Need info on Nancy, maiden-name, full date of birth, she was born in NC abt 1820, Thomas born NC abt 1809. They lived in Pickens county, SC in 1860. Children, Adam, Elizabeth, John Henry, Joseph Henry, Miles, Rebeca, Andrew, & Jackson. Joseph Henry born in Pickens county. In 1870, Thomas & Nancy lived in Sevier county TN. In 1880, found a Thomas & Nancy Dodgin in Transylvania county NC, but ages were off a couple yrs. Am trying to trace Native American line, not sure if it's on Dodgens side or Nancy's. One site listed her as Narsissia Nancy, but no last name. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Julie. When I sent you information from "A Summary of the Descendents of William Dogins, Sr. of Newberry Co. South Carolina", did I send page 75? It lists "James Miles" and Samantha's 3 kids. This line poses some of the same challenges as my line...they spell their names differently with each census and each land transaction. (My grandfather remembered that his grandfather was totally illiterate.) Do you think there were other children? They have Nancy, Lou, and Ira Thomas Dodgens. It also mentions that Samantha remarried after Miles died and had another child.

I would be happy to try to help if you have specific questions or information.

Allen Cox and Cal and Juanita Dodgen did some wonderful research back in 1984 in their booklet ("A Summary of the Descendats of William Dogins, Sr. of newberry Co., South Carolina.) There is no mention of Native American heritage on the Dodgen side. I know that doesn't help much, but...

Hi Cam,

I have read thru the info that you sent me and you are correct it does say James Miles and that they had Ira, Winnie Lou, and Nancy. I just got a e-mail from someone else with info though and I am still trying to figure it all out. Someone just filled me in that Samantha Cox- Miles's wife's middle name was Elizabeth and she went by Eliza. So that threw us off some. She is listed in the book by Jim Bob Tinsley,
The Land of Waterfalls ..." here is
the following on page 32: "Mysteriously perished in
the fireplace at her home. A Coroner's jury held an
inquest over the body of the victim at the residence
on 22 Jan 1879, and found that the "deceased Eliza
Dodgen came to her death by falling into the fire from
some unknown cause and burnt to death."" Her grave is
on the ridge east of Stairway Falls on Horse Pasture
River.
I haven't seen the book or copy yet, someone sent this to me and I just pasted and copied it for you to see.
I didn't know that and also the lady that contacted me filled me in some on Miles too, this is something she wrote on him :I do have that Miles Dodgen
remarried to a Laura Estelle Myers, but no other info
other than that on her. So this is new and imcoming info coming in and I am waiting to hear more. You both have helped me so much in the family tree and I want to thank you again for the info. I will ofcourse let you know more when I find out more. I am also about to e-mail you.

Hi Garry. According to "A Summary of The Descendats of William Dogins, Sr. of Newberry Co. South Carolina" by Allen B. Cox, Sr. and Cal and Juanita B. Dodgen (1984), page 69-70, (they had Joseph's name as John Henry) born 1839, died abt. 1880, married Margaret Woodruff (1849-1902). "He was known as 'Henry', ws in census of Jacosn Co, NC 1870. Margaret was in Sevier, TN as a widow in 1880. He was in Thomas' house, unmarried, in 1860".

They have listd as children: Margaret "Dove" or "Dovie", ?son (died young), Elias Washington, Will, Ellen, and Aaron.

Is who you are looking for? There's 4 pages of informatin on this family, is there something in particular you are looking for?

Hi Garry. Unfortuately the only information on "Dovie" was:

I think I gave you all I had on Margaret, the mom: Margaret Woodruff (1849-1902) Was a widow in Sevier, TN in 1880.

"Margaret "Dove" or Dovey" (born 1864) married 1) Pleasant King and 2) Robert Lane
Dovie had 6 children by Pleasant and left him for Robert. 'Tis said she 'went out one day to hang up the wash and left.' Julia Pierce recalls one lame son."

I have read other people who are looking at this line, so hopefully they will respond to compare notes!

Good luck.
