Hi all
I hope someone can shed some light on this for me. My father, grandfather, grt grandfather were all born in Alexandria Egypt. However, on any certificate i have it states of Maltese orgin ( no sure why) My grt grt grandfather is alledged to have been born in kefalonia ( source: a letter to the british government in 1956 regarding nationality) The ancestor i am looking for is Salvatore Muscat (Moscat) born abt 1844 kefalonia.
Please can someone guide me in the right direction. Also would he be British, Maltese or Greek. I have looked at british overseas and found nothing.

Many thanks

Muscat is a surname found in Malta. In 1826 the British brought 278 Maltese settlers from Gozo to Kefalonia and a village was renamed Nea (New)Malta. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poros,_Cephalonia

You will find that the family Muscat is Italian and not Maltese. Just because a one individual family unit migrated to Malta, it does not make the "family" as a whole Maltese.

For example: You will find Niccolo Muskat was Podesta (Prefect) of Chios in 1380 indicating an family association with Genoa and not with Venice. There are numerous marriages over the years 1500-1700 between the families Muskat and Pisani. There were numerous Muskat families in Greece. It is possible the family "Mosco" is a name variation of Muskat which brings thousands of greeks in this family (Moschos, Moschpoulos, Moschatos, Moscholios, Moschonas, etc).
It could be related to the Napoli family Muscetolla.

Do your research properly.

Many thanks margarita07 that was very helpful. Unfortunately I am only going on the information I was given which is to say all documentation states of Maltese origin. Whether or not they are remains to be seen. For the moment I will concentrate on the document that says he was born in Kefalonia.

A couple of questions. Is there a way to get in touch with the archives in Argostoli?
Are there any records pertaining to the settlers from Gozo to Kefalonia.

Many thanks all

Thank you for your kind words. You can find the website of the General Archives for Kefalonia here http://gak.kef.sch.gr/Cont/cont-00.htm

And here is where I read about the Maltese settlers.
