I found this article -

Benton Harbor News Palladium, April 23, 1945 Page 10

Hartford friends will be saddened to learn of the death of a former local boy, PFC Edward Stoddard, USMC, on Iwo Jima on April 8. Official word reached his mother, Mrs. D.H. Milner in Phoenix Arizona, on April 8.
Mrs. Milner resided in Hartford until about 10 years ago. The son, Edward had made his home since early infancy with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Martin, and later with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Rollo Stockwell of Hartford.

I am wondering if perhaps his parents were Dorothy Martin and Edward Stoddard. Your Edward's listing at www.findagrave.com lists him as a Jr. and the Edward who was born in 1887 would be the right age to be his father. Edward Sr. is listed as divorced in the 1930 census.
