Surnames: Giberson, Gibison, Gibeson, Newhouse, Henderson
Hi Joe,
My name is Lorie Wylie and I live in Gibisonville Hocking Co. Ohio. I'm not related to the Gibison's directly, but I am doing the history of Gibisonville and I'm getting real confused with all the Benjamins.

Who was the Benjamin who married Mary Newhouse? Was Benjamin, who was married to Hannah Henderson, his father?

I have on the 1830 Hocking Co. Census two Benjamins.
Benjamin, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-50.

Benjamin Jr., 1 male 20-30, 2 females 0-5, 1 female 20-30.

On the 1840 Census of Hocking Co.
Benjamin 1 male 0-5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 0-5, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 30-40.

Other Gibersons/Gibisons/Gibeson in the area at that time were:
1830(Gibison)
Samuel, Joel, Benjamin, Benjamin Jr, and John
1840(Giberson, Gibeson)
Samuel, Samuel, Benjamin, William, Joel
1850 (gibison)
Samuel age 40 Laboror born NJ
Margaret age 41 born in Ohio
Isaac age 11 born in Ohio
William age 8 born in Ohio
Rebecca age 6 born in Ohio
Joseph age 4 born in Ohio
Margaret age 2 born in Ohio

Joel Gibeson age 43 merchant born in NJ
Susan age 34
Elizabeth Stiverson age 20 born in Ohio
Martha Federolf age (can't read) born in Ohio
Thomas Woods age 8 born in Ohio (This is my husband's gggrandfather. We are trying to find out why and how he came to live with the gibisons.)

Maybe you can clear this up for me. If you need anything looked up or copied in Hocking Co. let me know. I'm by the courthouse everyday.

Lorie Wylie
PS (This is so much fun!)

I am most interested in helping to solve your questions and reading the history that you are writing.

Here is the best sense that I can make from the evidence available to me.

#553 Benjamin Sr (b abt 1750 in NJ) He was a loyalist during the Revolutionary War and his proprety in Upper Freehold, Monmouth County was confiscated in 1789. However, by 1783 he had land in Dover Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey.

His son #559 Benjamin Jr (b abt 1775) sold land in Dover Township Monmouth County, NJ, in 1814 and 1818. In the first transaction #559 Benjamin Jr and #576 Samuel Giberson (brother) sold the land. In the later transaction, Benjamin #559 and wife #560 Hannah, as well as #576 Samuel and wife #6683 Mary, sold the land. In both transactions, #559 is referred to as "Benjamin, Jr". This Benjamin is referred to as "Benjamin Sr" in the 1830 census of Hocking County, Ohio.

#559 Benjamin Jr also had a son named Benjamin (b1800 in New Jersey), which we will refer to as Benjamin III #12458. Benjamin III #12458 is referred to as "Benjamin Jr" in the 1830 census of Hocking County, Ohio. I think that Benjamin III #12458 was born to the unknown first wife of #559 Benjamin II.

#559 Benjamin II also had the following children, apparently by Hannah Henderson #560.
#14033 John Giberson (b abt 1805 NJ)
#14034 Joel Giberson (b 1808 in NJ)
#14035 William (b 1811 in NJ)

Joel had two daughters enumerated in both the 1830 and 1840 censuses. One of the daughters may have been the Elizabeth Stivison, age 20, listed in the 1850 census, who apparently had apparently orphaned a daughter, Eliza J Stiveson, age 9, by the 1860 census. I suspect that Thomas Woods is an orphan grandson of the other daughter.

I have prepared the following report summarizing Giberson or Gibison persons for Hocking County, Ohio. If you want more information concerning any of these persons, please reference the person number when contacting me. I would appreciate any additional records that you may gleen from the Hocking County Court House for any of these individuals.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I think you made a little mistake on your info. You have #559 Benjamin II as the father of #14034 Joel Giberson. Joel was the father of Samuel, the same one, who along with his son William, layed out the town of Gibisonville Ohio. This biograpy comes from the History of Hocking Valley Ohio 1883:

Joel Gibison is a native of Monmouth Co. NJ born Sept 22, 1807. Son of Samuel and Mary (Hendrickson). He was 11 when his parents came to Ohio and located in Pickaway Co. In 1826 he came to Laurel Twp. and in 1849 bought the farm he now resides in. He was married March 13, 1828 to Elizabeth Friend of this county. They had 3 daughters, Mary Ann, Elizabeth, and Eliza. He was married to his second wife Mrs. Susan Judy in 1836, She died in 1872. March 7, 1875 he married Almira Keller of this twp. They have 3 children, William, Nevada, and Joel. Mr. Gibison is politically Republican and has served his twp. as Constable, Twp. Trustee, Treasurer, and Justice of the Peace. He is a member of the United Brethern Church. He has 73 acres of fine, well-cultivated land,

Samuel and his son William layed out Gibisonville in 1840.

Check your info for me and get back with me. Thanks

Lorie

The info you and Joe have given me is definitely my line of Gibersons. I am confused over Joel #14034. Lorie says Joel was the father of Samuel, the same one who along with his son William, layed out the town of Gibisonville, Ohio. Then Lorie says he is the son of Samuel and Mary Hendrickson. Was it Samuel #576 who laid out Gibisonville or Samuel #6685? Was it founded in 1840 or 1835? Was it by Samuel and his son William or Samuel and his brother Joel? I really appreciate all the info and would like more on the founding of Gibisonville. I also have been finding quite a bit of info on Gibersons in Macoupin Co. Il. This is where my grandpa Lloyd Lester was born. From census records alot of these Gibersons are the same ones from Ohio. I plan on visiting Shaws Point Twp. Macoupin Co. and Bethel Ridge Cemetary in the near future. Daniel Giberson was the original owner of the land on which Bethel Ridge Cemetary is located. The same Daniel that was born in Gibisonville, Ohio on May 4,1818.

Surnames: Gibison Hendrickson Friend Judy Keller
Hi, it's me.
Here is what I got from the 'History of Hocking Valley 1883':
Laurel Twp.'s first settlement was made in 1812. Mr. Smith and 2 Koon brothers were the first in the area and were escaping the draft of the War of 1812.

Gibisonville: 1st church Methodist Episcopal located where Gibisonville now stands 1837.
layed out by Samuel and Wm. Gibison in 1840. (I have a copy of a 'comic' that was made as a birthday joke to Bob Moore. He said his great grandfather and great uncle layed out the town in 1840. His mother was Nevada Gibison, who's father was Joel)
Also I found this in the same book:
Joel Gibison is a native of Monmouth Co. NJ born Sept. 22, 1807. Son of Samuel and Mary Hendrickson. He was 11 when his parents came to Ohio and located in Pickaway Co. In 1826 he came to Laurel Twp. and in 1849 bought farm he now resides in. He was married March 13, 1828 to Elizabeth Friend of this county. They had 3 daughters, Mary Ann, Elizabeth, and Eliza. He was married to his second wife, Mrs Susan Judy in 1836. She died in 1872. March 7, 1875 he married Almira Keller of this twp. They have 3 children, William, Nevada, and Joel. Mr. Gibison is politically Rebublican and has served his twp. as Constable, Twp. Trustee, Treasurer, and Justice of Peace. He is a member of the United Brethern Church. He has 73 acres of fine, well-cultivated land.

Now if you can decipher all this it comes out like this:
Samuel and Mary had at least 2 sons, Joel and William.

Seeing that Joel was born in 1807 the Samuel that was born in 1787 in Monmouth and who married Mary Hendrickson was the same Samuel who founded the town.

Hope you can understand all this. I love genealogy!!!

Lorie, thank you so much for all the help. Everything is starting to fall into place and now, I have so many leads. I am really interested in learning more about Gibisonville. Is there a book a person can buy? I am hoping to go to Gibisonville this summer and just look around. Do you happen to know the cemetarys some of the Gibersons are buried in? I agree with you, I love genealogy also. It is very addictive. The Gibison name is where alot of my family stopped in their search. Again thank you. Kathy

Hi,
Go to hockinghills.com and check out the area. Have them send you a tourism guide. Also, if you can, the first weekend after the 4th of July, is the Gibisonville Festival. Now, we are a town of 52, but this is like a reunion. We have a parade on Sat. night. The museum.... yes, we have our own museum. It's in the second oldest building in town. It's small, but holds some really neat stuff.

Let me know when you're coming, I'll show you around!

I'm still trying to find where Joel is buried, and I'll let you know. My husband's aunt, who is 95 and some what clear in mind, thinks he might be buried in The Moore Cem. I can''t find the Moore Cem! My husband's grandmother lived to be 108. She was clear in mind, up to the last 2wks of her life. The stories she told! She was born 1888 and died 1996.

Hope you find everything you need.
