Surnames: Coleman, Horna
My mother, her sister and brother were placed in an orphanage around 1930 after their mother died. I am trying to locate any of their records. All three were adopted about 2 years later by Walter and Marjorie Horne. In letters we found after my mom died, she wrote that it was a Quaker orphanage in Oakland, California.

Names:

Wilbertha Coleman changed to Bonnie Patricia Horne
Maria Coleman changes to Jeanne Horne
Phillip Coleman changed to Donald Horne

If anyone could direct me to possible information source, I would appreciate it very much!

I found a 1935 Oakland article that pertain to an organization called "the Friend's Society" in the article the First Unitarian Church is mentioned...I am not "up" on the Quakers so I am not sure of the affliation, but I think I have heard the term "the friends" used in conjunction with the Quakers. I may be way off base tho'.

found reference to "The Friends Society" or "Society of Friends" of Berkley..they had a meeting house at Vine and Walnut sts in Berkley

maybe you can get some assistance from one of these sites?

Thanks for your help, Connie. The info you supplied regarding the accident is definitely my grandmother, as well as the census info. I will check the other references.

Your help is much appreciated!
