Converting from PAF to Mac software

Converting from PAF to Mac software

I have an extensive database which I've compiled over many years in the Personal Ancestral File software. I have recently switched from a PC to a Mac which does not recognize PAF. Is there a way to capture my database on my Mac without re-entering all my data (which would take forever for over 6000 entries!)

Thanks.

Yes there is! Export your PAF file to a GEDCOM. (The "export to GEDCOM" is probably under PAF's File menu.) Copy the resulting GEDCOM file to a CD or to a memory stick. Insert the CD or memory stick into your Mac.

Start Reunion.

Create a new file.

One of the options when creating a new file in Reunion is "Import from GEDCOM". Select this.

Look for the GEDCOM file on your CD or memory stick. Double click.

It may take several minutes, but Reunion will take the data in the GEDCOM and convert it into its own format.

Voila!

Hi Jillaine, I notice you have converted from PC to Mac and are using Reunion for genealogy. Have you noticed any problems in the conversion? Is it compatible with New family Search? I assume you still need to create a GEDCOM before moving records from New Family Search to Reunion.

I just bought Reunion and converted my database via a Gedcom file - extremely easy to do!!! It didn't take me long to prefer the Reunion software over the PAF. My only problem is transferrence of source information - it didn't seem to take. other than that - brilliant.

I don't use the New family search, so can't speak to that.

As for source conversion, it depends on how you initially recorded your sources. Apparently a number of people don't use specific fields of their prior genie program and instead dump everything into a text/notes field. Reunion then simply places this in the text field.

pugpillow, is that what happened to you?

No, Jillaine, I used the specific fields. I'm thinking now that maybe I do have the sources somewhere but am not familiar enough with that segment of the programme to recall them. It is showing source numbers in the Source section, but I haven't yet found what these represent and if what I presume are category numbers are consistent across all my names entries.

Ah, well, let me see if I can help you find them.

Reunion does have the ability to categorize one's sources and when I first imported my GEDCOM into Reunion, I had no such categories-- they were all lumped under "unused" or some such.

Here's how you find them. From the LIST menu, select SOURCES. Make sure TYPE (upper left corner of Source window) is "All types". You should see a long list of all your sources.

Note the options in the lower left corner, specifically "Source Tools". See what you can do there. It's totally cool.

From a particular person's page, you can also see which facts are "sourced" by looking for a red number (or numbers) by each item that is sourced. If you click on that fact (or name), the details for that person come up, and the citations should be listed at the bottom of that window.

Wonderful. Thanks, Jillaine. I do see the red numbers and I'll check the rest out.

Is the Mac user-friendly with genealogy files? Once PAF files are converted to Reunion in Mac, how do they work with Family Tree Maker or is that a Windows app only?? I am considering switching over to a MAC but have all my genealogy files in PAF. I am wondering if there is so much difference using a Mac to warrant the changeover or if I should just stick with Windows and PAF and Companion. Thanks.
