Have hit a brick wall - Looking for information on John Berry, Sr. He is listed in the 1810 Hyde County, NC census and in the records of 1828 estate sale. Can not find any more. Need to know his wife's name and the names of children.

So far I have the Following:
John Berry, Jr. b. 1817, d. 1898, married Sallie Ann Stotesbury. Children -
Richard Thomas Berry, b.1838, d. 1905
James Edward Berry, b. 1844, d. 1928
Marinda Berry, b. 1845, d. 1845
John Henry Clay Berry, b. 1848, d. 1948
Francis Elizabeth Berry, b. 1852, d. 1905
Alexander Berry, b. 1854, d. 1924
William Timothy Berry, b. 1854, d. 1934.

Have other Berry's but can not associate them. They may have been brothers, but need a list of JOHN BERRY, SR's children to be able to make the connection.

Looking forward to any help. E-Mail kparks@meckcom.net

I saw your reply and it is interesting that you used the term "tribe". I have just recently found out that my family is of the Mattamuskeet Indian Tribe of Hyde County, North Carolina.

I still do not have any information on John Berry, b 1810. I know that he was married and had 2 sons, William - b. 1834, and Benjamin - b. 1836. John was listed in the 1850 Hyde County Census as follows:

John Berry - 40 years
William Berry - 16 years
Benjamin Berry - 14 years
Mary Jackson - 40 years
Lavinia Jackson - 14 years

I have a copy of a marriage record of John Berry and Mary Jackson dated 1854.

I also know that John was related to a William Berry who married Bridgett ?.

John Berry's son William had the following children:

Ottoway Burns Berry, b. 1870
Mathew Ranson Berry , b. 1874
Samual Anson Berry, b. 1875
Benjamin Richard Berrry, b. 1881
Alice
Penelope (both girls died as infants)

If you have any information please let me know. Thanks

Berry

That is too weird, that Ottoway I mean.
One of my Mary Jacksons kids named one of their sons Ottway Manning Jackson.

Never really seen that name except once before.

What information do you have on the Berry's and the Jackson's? Also there was an Otway Burns in North Carolina. He was a captain of a ship.

I have been told that the name Ottoway/Otway is an indian name. There is a band of Ottawa Indians in Ohio. If you would like to E-mail me you may

They were in Hyde County, NC as far as I know. Looking back at my documentation I find nothing in the cemetary book to indicate that they were buried in any of them. Also there is not death record on either one that I know of so far. As I say it seems that they just appeared and disappeared. Does this help? Do you have a possiblity of any sort? I would welcome anything. This brick wall is really thick.

Kathy, The name Otway or Ottaway has absolutely no Indian background. It is an old English family name. The story I heard re: Otway, Ohio is that the town was named to honor Thomas Otway, Restoration dramatist.

My e-mail is Otwaygini@aol.com

I have an Ann Berry born 1740, died 1800. She was married to James Jackson and the lived in North Carolina. She was a member of the Lumbee-Cheraw Indian Peoples.
Any info on either of them would be appreciated.
