The following notation appears on the last page of the returns for Scott township:

"I, Thomas Greenwood, County Judge in and for the County of Fremont and State of Iowa do certify that the within is a true return of the Census List as returned at my office this 3d day of June AD l854 by the different Township Assessors of Sd. County.

"In Testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my Seal of Office at Sidney this 3d day of July AD 1854. THOMAS GREENWOOD COUNTY JUDGE."

On the last page of the returns for Sidney township, the following notation appears:

"CENSUS 1854. Census of Fremont. Filed July 10, 1854. G.W.McClary, Secy. of State."

N.B.: The fate of the original copy of this 1854 county census appears to have the same scenario as does that for the 1852: Adrain Anderson gave the census department at the State Library in Des Moines permission to provide me with xerox copies of it. After doing this he asked the department to return the originals to him, because there was someone he would like to show them to. Well, the census department never saw them again, nor do I know whether Anderson ever saw them again, either. I was never able to double check on any question which arose when Mabel Bridges (a cousin) and I were typing up copies of it.

Mabel Bridges alphabetized her lists. I kept the enumerations in their original order, and I will give these after her alphabetized list. --Walter Farwell

1854 COUNTY CENSUS FOR FREMONT COUNTY, IOWA: "SCOTT TOWNSHIP".--Walter G. Leming, Assessor, provides the same information as found on the other township listings, but also numbers each enumeration, and sets off the "Tabor Farms". He signs his returns this way:

"I hereby Certify that the whole number of males 402 (Four hundred and Two). Of Females are 389 (Three hundred and eight nine). Of voters are 164 (one hundred and sixty four). Of Militia 148 one hundred and forty eight and (1) Idiot and one (1) Alien. GRAND TOTAL 788 (Seven hundred and eight eight.--Walter G. Leming Assessor."

N.B.: It is almost certain that Scott township now (1854) included its present territory: Harlow C. Kingsbury opened Osage postoffice at the same cite as present Bartlett, and also operated a warehouse in which goods arriving by steamboat at "Kingsbury Landing" could be temporarily stored, awaiting those who had ordered them. Kingsbury is NO. 139 in the original enumeration. This is the reason why the enumeration for Fulton township is so small! In 1852, Fulton township had included the Bartlett area.--W.F.

SIDNEY TOWNSHIP, 1854 County Census.--This census shows "white males", "white females", "colored males", "colored females", "voters", "militia", "aliens", "total". (I am going to omit showing (1)colored males, (2)colored females and (3)alien notation except where a number other than zero is shown; nor am I going to show the total notation unless there be a good reason for doing so.)

Mabel Bridges (Apr. 6, 1891 - April 18, 1976) alphabetized her listing. I kept the enumerations--and tried to keep the pages--in their original order, which I will show after her alphabetized list. (The xerox copies for this township especially needed to be checked with the orginals, but that was not to be!)--W.F.

ORIGINAL ORDER OF ENUMERATION: I can not be positive of the original order, from page to page, of the assessor's enumeration of Sidney township. There is no problem within the limits of each page, but it is impossible to tell for certain which is the following page. SO, I am following the order in which he added up the various pages in order to get the total population for Sidney township.

C.T. Stevenson, assessor for Sidney township, divided the township into (1) The Town of Sidney, and (2) Township of Sidney.--Walter Farwell.

TOWN OF SIDNEY:

MABEL E. BRIDGES, oldest of the two children of Glen and Grace Greenwood (Liggett) Bridges, was born April 6, 1891 several miles southeast of Sidney, Iowa. Her grandparents, Jonathan Ira and Mary Catherine (Black) Bridges, were of the early settlers of Fremont county, first living east of Riverton on Ledgewood Creek and in 1852, moving to McKissick Grove. In 1894, her parents left the Center school community and moved to New Murdock, Kingman county, Kansas. She remembered fondly that while living there she learned to read at age three years. Because her parents returned to Fremont county after one year, she only remembered the cactus flowers that bloom in that area of Kansas--and their motherless colt which came each morning to the kitchen door for its milk.

She started her formal academic training at the age of seven. As a teen ager, she took the Normal Training Course at Sidney High school from which she was graduated when eighteen years old. Then, as the "greenest thing ever in Fremont county", she began her teaching career in 1909 at Riverside school in Prairie township. Their school term lasted six months. For the two month spring term in 1910, she taught northwest of Sidney at Possum Valley School. She recalled the Lockett and Freeman children as students here. For the fall, and winter six month term, of 1910 she taught at Pomeroy School in Madison Township which was at that time the largest county school in Fremont county. "One half of the school was related to me!" she remembered.

She did not teach during the spring term of 1911, but did teach that fall at the Sunnyside School in Prairie township. In 1912, and for several years following, she taught at Center School southeast of Sidney, and then spent two years at Peru State Teachers College where she completed a course qualifying her to teach in high schools. She then taught two years at Butte, Nebr.; one year at Grove, Nebr.; from September 1920 to May 1921, at Rushville, Sheridan county, Nebr.; and twenty six years at Gordon, Nebraska.

Interspersed between these years of teaching, she continued her graduate studies at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln:

"THE SIDNEY ARGUS-HERALD. January 7, 1932. Miss Mabel Bridges, who is working for her doctor's degree at the University of Nebraska, was initiated into Pi Sigma Alpha, a national honorary political science fraternity, when the group held its annual dinner at the university club in Lincoln in December. This is the second honor which has come to Miss Mabel. She was pledged to Phi Betta Kappa when she received her A.B. degree two years ago. Miss Mabel is one of our own girls, we are very proud of her success, and the community extends heartiest congratulations."

She received her Master of Arts degree in the field of English History. "History at that time was considered a man's subject and I recall with mixed emotions of having been quesioned about my choice of academic and teaching endeavors." She often spoke of the academic standards for research which she believed in: "No number of secondary sources--what someone says someone else did--can prove a TRUTH, and you should have at least three primary sources before accepting a fact as a TRUTH. These sources--where the person who did it, or who was there, is the one talking--these are the ones which establish a fact!"

Soon aftwards, and during the spring of 1932, she noticed an increased difficulty in breathing. Rochester, Minnesota, doctors found a "hairy mass embedded in her chest" which they theorized should have been a twin, but had not continued growing. Late in September 1932 she returned from Mayo's after three months' care.

The McCarthy-era of witch-hunting, for Mabel, was a turbulent, disagreeable time in American history, and she would wish for this never to be experienced again.

After a teaching career of 35 years, she returned to her farm home north of Riverton where she spent her retirement working in her garden, researching family history and compiling data on early Fremont county. After the deaths of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Lloyd (Helen Winkler) Bridges, and of her niece, Catherine Bridges, she took an apartment in Sidney opposite the high school building. Declining health forced her to the Sidney Health Care Center where she passed away on April 18, l976. Interment in Riverton Cemetery.--Walter Farwell
