SA Grieve, Jeweler, Adams

I am trying to date a ring that has been handed down thru the family. It is in a purple velvet ring box (which I've always assumed was the original, but don't know that for a fact); the inside of the box lid is marked "SA Grieve, Successor to C.A. (illegible), Adams, MA." I've found ads in old newspaper archives indicating that the SA Grieve business was active in Adams from at least the late 1920s to the early 1950s, but the ring appears to be older. To date, I haven't found listings in any of the city directories I've consulted. Does anyone have any info on the dates SA Grieve was in business, or any suggestions on how I can find this information? Many thanks.
Kathleen

In a couple of libraries I've been in, they had 'Town/city' reports - expenditures for the town, monies they collected for taxes(I believe) - you might want to try that. Also, I just 'googled' SA Grieve jewellers and came up with a company in New Zealand nothing in MA.
