Richland Parish Historic Maps of Propery Ownership ca 1900s

Surnames: Mhoon, Mohoon
My Grandfather, Robert B Mhoon Sr., was the Assessor for Richland Parish around 1901. In 1905 he was reappointed by Gov Blanchard.

I've the New Orleans Daily Picayune from Oct 6, 1907 with his obit which mentions: ...The assessment in acreage, description and valuation is absolutely correct. He not only checks over the land every year, but since he has been in office has made two maps with the name of each landowner inscribed on his land and brought the changes of title down to date. The latest map is of incalculable benefit to the public as well as this obliging officer who has distinguished himself as the only assessor who ever took this much pride and interest in his work in this parish...

Thought I'd pass this on for any of you who may be close enough to Rayville to inquire about those maps for genealogy reference purposes.

NJOY,
Bob

Wow! What a tribute to your ancestor! Do you know where the maps can be seen? I have been searching the https://wwwslodms.doa.la.gov/HistoricalDocument site for maps but I do not know what "PLAT" coordinates I should be using for the Richland area.

There are some great maps on site at the courthouse. The DOA site is also good. If you know the GPS coordinates for any location, you can then google what township/section/range to look for. I found several of the old surveys and they did have family names listed on plots. Here is one example - which is of the Girard/Start/Crew Lake area from 1853.

Thanks, Luke. So where we grew up would be on a map marked T 18N 6E? That is what I was needed. Lots of historical maps are on one of the LA gov. websites that I don't have handy right now. But I wasn't sure what coordinates to use for around where we grew up. Thanks!

That's right! We grew up in T18N, R6E, and we are in section 34. On a few of the really old maps, it looks like Crew Lake actually took the path of Webb Hill Road.

There are a couple of sites where you can find maps on your ancestors land... one is the USGS Land records where you can buy topo maps and locate your families land and "shade" them in and label who lived where. http://topomaps.usgs.gov/drg/

Then there is another Federal site for the Bureau of Land Management where you can locate the deeds of land granted to ancestors and such. You can find plat maps and the actual documents where your ancestor was given the land! www.glorecords.blm.gov/

Have fun!

Thanks! Another great resource that has some old property ledgers and original surveys is through the LA Office of State Lands. Here is a link. https://wwwslodms.doa.la.gov/HistoricalDocument

If you know a Township and Range it's a good resource. And I have just recently discovered a new mapping system that takes a bit of learning, but could also be really helpful. It will show all the original surveys stitched together. http://sonris-www.dnr.state.la.us/gis/agsweb/IE/JSViewer/ind...
