I know you asked about relatives from MO or AR, but this Jim Canard was from Mississippi, and since we are in such close proximity, thought I would answer.
I had an uncle named Jim Canard (James Wayne Canard), born in Hattiesburg, MS. His mother was Sally Jane. He was the "black sheep" of the family, was a Merchant Marine, traveled everywhere and was married about nine times (and we use the term "married" loosely). Uncle Jim died about ten years ago and had no children that we know about. He was quite a colorful character. When he died, he was in his early 80's. My grandfather's name was Charlie Clarence Canard and came here from France. He worked on the Panama Canal when the French took over the construction. My grandmother was Sally Jane Soley from Hattiesburg. Their children were, Charlie Clarence Canard, Jr.(my father), Henry Canard, Jim Canard, Ruth Canard, Mary Canard, and Ellen Canard.

Many thanks for taking time to answer, but not the same person. But what a character!I have a couple of Black Sheep in the family also, and I like to think they just add spice to the family history.

Thanks again,

Ron Willams

Mr. Williams,
I ran across this web site today and tried to look around for some other Canards that go beyond my grandfather. All I can tell you is that my father, William Canard, lives in Russellville, AR. He has 5 brothers and 2 sisters, although I don't know exactly where they are all at. My grandfather was also named William Canard and was married to a Shelton. My father grew up in Eastern Arkansas around Tupelo and Newport which are located in Jackson County. I don't know who my grandfather's parents were, how many brothers and sisters he had, etc.the family history beyond that. However, being a history major (MA and BA) I am greatly interested in what you are trying to do. Please let me know if there is anything I could do in your help. I hope you find this helpful. Please feel free to e-mail me anytime. Like I said I am really interested in finding out more about my grandfather Canard and his family.

Thanks,
Brian Canard

Hello Brian,

I share your interest in History, and especialy that of eastern Arkansas. I have found that tracing your family roots involves a lot of historical research quite apart from the genealogy angle, because knowing who your ancestors are is only part of the story. Often, knowing why your ancestors "did what they did" is just as important, and that requires knowing the times in which they lived.

But on to the Canards. I do know that a large number of Canards were, and still are,
living in the northern part of Jackson County and the southern part of Lawrence County, AR. It is a bit confusing to find so many spellings of the name. My particular interest is in one Jim Canard (or Kinnard) who was the son of Sarah Jane Canard (later Bennett). Sarah Jane was my GG Aunt, and family lore has it that her Canard husband was killed in the Civil War. If we have it right, she was born about 1846 or so in Missouri, and died about 1949 at the ripe age of 103. Dates may be off a couple of years each way.

Any connection?

Regards,
Ron Williams

I have information on Montgomery Canard, born 3/Jun/1845, Jackson County, TN. and his sister, Sarah Jane Canard, born 2/Apr/1842, TN. Parents killed in TN. accident when the children were young. They came here (Missouri) and made their home with Uncle Michael Miller Humble. Both married and lived at Ozark, Mo. I have their children's names and a picture of Sarah Jane Canard.

Joyce...would love to compare notes with you. I descend from the same family...originally from Jackson Co. TN. Would love to fully understand this line as I have always wondered what happened to Hazlet Kinnard.
