James Hilliard Dunklin, born 15 NOv 1834, Greenville, Butler Co., Alabama
son and 1st child of Joseph Dunklin and Mary Christian Judge.
His wife was Abigail Susan Reid, b. 12 Mar 1838 and died 25 June, 1838.
He md. 2nd Mary Jane Reid (sister of Abbie), who was born 1842 and didd 1909.
Their children by the 1st wife: Mary Judge (Mollie) Dunklin,who married
Dr Aristides Reynolds of Marietta, Ga. 2nd Elizabeth Dunklin, who married
Walter O. Parmer of Tennessee. The other children were James Hilliard, Jr.
who died June, 1932 (Newspaper item from Greenville, ALa.) He married ELizabeth
Flowers, daughter of James Flowers Rutledge. 4. Anna Dunklin who married
J.F. Steiner of Greenville, Ala.5. Joseph (Joe) Dunklin of Greenville ALa.
6. Jennie, Dunklin (died early)7. Erin Dunklin, 8. Lora Dunklin
who died early and 9. Judge Dunklin. I don't know if the order I have
them in is correct. It seems that they all lived for a time in Greenville,
Butler Co., Ala.
James Hilliard and Abbie were buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Greenville, Ala.
James Hilliard's parents were Joseph H. Dunklin, b. 22 Aug 1804 in the
Greenville Dist, S.C.He moved to ALabama in 1819. On 23 Dec 1829, he married
Mary C. Judge (md. by Rev Benjamin Dulaney) in Greenville, Ala. He served 6
consecutive terms as County Treasurer of Butler Co., Ala. Mary,born 14 JUly
1813 and died 23 Jan 1847. Both are buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Breenville Ala.
Mary Christian Judge was a sister of Thomas James Judge of the Supreme Court of
Alabama. Her pparents were Col. Thomas Hutchinson and Mary Cook of S.C., the
great, great granddaughter of Capt. John Cook, who moved before the Revolution
from Brunswick Co., Va. to S.C. and was Captain in Col. William Washingtin's

third child)1. Elmira Dunklin, who md. Judge Fletcher Johnson, 2. Abigail Dunklin,
who md. Capt. Holden Wade, and Thomas Judge Dunklin (I'm not sure about this last one!!)
Joseph's parents were James Dunklin and Elizabeth Bolling. James md. 4 times and
had children by all of them. James' parents were Joseph Dunklin and Jean Wathin, who
met on the ship coming from England. They married in Charleston, Berkeley Co., S.C.
and lived in Four Holes Swamp, where they raised 7 children: 1.Joseph Dunklin, Jr. b ca.1758
md. Sarah Margaret Sullivan and he died in 1806. 2. Ann (Nancy) Dunklin b. ca. 1760
3. Elizabeth Dunklin b. ca 1763 andd.1830. She md a Mr. Sweeney. 4. John Dunklin b. ca 1765
d. 1834. He md. Mary (Polly) Bowman. Both buried New Madrid Co., MO. 5. Mary Dunklin
b. 17 Sep 1772, d. 1850. She md Hewlett Sullivan 19 Dec 1787. They were both buried i
Methodist Church's Lebanon Church Yard in Greenville, S.C. My direct line descendant was the
next child,6. James Dunklin, b. 24 June 1778, md. Elizabeth Bolling 9 May 1800. She died
10 Apr. 1827, after having 5 children: Abigail, Joyhn P. (our direct descendant), Nancy Ann
Joseph H. (your direct line) and 5. Lucinda. He then md. Margery Law,(possibly about 1809-1812)
who died after 1816. Her children were Caroline, b. ca. 1812,(She md. S.A. Mears) William
Alanson Turner,b. 25 Dec 1813,md. Mary herbert Cook, James Law, b. 12 Mar 1816, md. 1841
(Mary Amanda Burnett) and d. 8 Feb 1887. Both are buried in Pioneer Cemetery in Greenville,
James' 3rd wife, Martha Irby, had only one child,Irby Dunklin, b. ca. 1818. After Martha died,
which was probably in childbirth or shortly afterwards, James levft Irby with Martha's parents
ina Greenville, S.C. He was raised by them and late in life md. Harriet F. Montgomery. He
was a medical doctor.
James, along with several of his relatives and children, left in 1819 for Alabama. There he met
and married Catherine lee Gafford, a widow, b. 19 Jan 1782 and d. 1 Apr. 1862.She had Daniel Gafford
Duklin b. 28 Oct 1823 in Greenville, Ala. d. 14 Sep 1895. He md 1. Susan Catherine Burnett
(b. 9 Nov 1829,d. 28 June 1862) on 19 Jan 1847; md 2nd Hannah pickett Patton after 1862.She was
b. 16 Oct 1839, d. 19 June 1896. A lot of the information about James and his family was obtained from
"Butler Co. in the Nineteenth ce4ntury" by Marilyn CDavis Hahn.
The last child of Joseph and Jean was William.,b. 17 May 1781, md. Anne Hendrick Hamilton 1799 and
d. 7 Jan 1828. in Lowndes Co., Ala. They were buried in the Dunklin-Wathin Cenetery in Lowndes co., Ala.
They had 10 children.
