Looking for info on Civil War veteran Christian Kehm, a.k.a. Kemp, who served with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry.

Kehm, Christian W., Sgt Co I; mustered Sep 12, 1861; deserted Jun 23, 1862; born Jan 9, 1842 [calculated] in Baltimore, Maryland; died Jan 5, 1901; enlisted with the 114th Pa Inf, busted to private, deserted again, and joined the 2nd Pa Heavy Artillery (as Christian Kemp - he said that's how everyone pronounced his name anyway) from which he received his only discharge and based his subsequent pension application; a shoemaker and teacher from Oxford Township, Adams County; 5' 8", brown hair, blue eyes; wounded in the left foot at the battle of Cold Harbor June 6, 1864, and discharged on a surgeon's certificate March 1, 1965; married Annie Laura Farrell June 16, 1862, in Baltimore, having met her while stationed there with the 87th (a little fact the pension examiner had in front of his nose and overlooked); lived in Baltimore after the war; buried in Western Cemetery, Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland

Yes, I'm the person you corresponded with in February. I have a lot of information on his family life after the civil war, i.e. children, etc. I'm still looking for his parents and/or brothers or sisters. There's a group of Kehms in Baltimore who are shoemakers. Some are his kids, but the others are probably brothers or maybe his father. If this is the kind of stuff you're looking for, let me know. Christian is my gggrandfather.

See ya,

Dale

Did you ever find out what that "W" stands for?

Hi, I think the W. stands for William. Haven't seen anything in print to verify it, but there is a William A. Kehm, born 1866 in Maryland that is either his son or nephew that seems to inhabit his world. William is also a shoemaker. I'll be able to ascertain this connection after I find them in the 1870 census.

I have a great grandmother, Anna Kehm Maurer emigrated from, I believe, Timisoara, Rumania. Married to Joseph Maurer. Anna had a Kehm brother who married a woman named Marguerite. Marguerite lived to a very old age, right up the street from me in Baltimore. She had always lived in Baltimore, so I wonder if she and/or her husband, are in a tree that also includes Christian Kehm. This search is in its infancy, and our records are poor.

Hi,
The Kehms you mention could be part of this family. Our ancestors came from Darmstadt, however. Margarette or Margueritte is a family name, I just need more information. Do you have any of the names of the Kehm ancestors? Christian had 6 or 7 brothers and some lived in Baltimore and some lived in Pennsylvania. Our family were shoemakers and lived in the northeast section of Baltimore City...like Gay St. and Durham St. and all around there. I have quite a bit of history back to Darmstadt, but it stops there. Please write back. Dale Summer-Busch

I was born and raised in NE Baltimore, as were Marguerite Kehm's children. I do not know her husbands first name. Her daughter lives in Columbia. I will contact her. My great grandmother Anna Kehm, was the daughter of Martin and Anna Kehm and was born in Temesch Sinandrei, Rumania, about 30km NE of Timisoara, on 11/24/1889. So I would imagine, if there is a connection, Martin would most likely be Christian's peer. I will get back to you. My home email is clifton@nemontel.net, here in Montana.

I realize its been 5 years since you posted your information about Christian Kehm, but I just read it for the first time. I believe your Christian Kehm is related to my Kehm family, from Adams County, Pa. I have lots of info about these Kehms, and if you would like to learn some about this family, you may contact me.

My great grandmother was Margaret A. Kehm who was married to William H. Freyer. She passed away in 1945 in Baltimore, and I am trying to find her father and mother. Was she related to you?

I don't have a Margaret as one of Christian's siblings, but I only list four siblings, which was a small family then. I might have missed someone. I am not related to Kehm's in any way, so I have no expert to ask.
