That would be the Recruit Training Command. It was first established as a base in July 1905. Your Great Grandpa probably was a civilian working for the government as a chef in the Galley. My Dad was a cook in the Navy, but when he was stationed in the U.S. a lot of the people he worked with were civilian.

Thank you for that info. I'll check into writing to the naval station itself to see if there are any archives of past employees. By running a google search for the station should bring up their address etc. Thanks again for your input.
