Your message cracked me up, because my great-great grandmother, Louisa Bragg Clarke, whose father James came from Vassalborough Maine, and she too looks like a squaw. In fact when I first saw her picture I said she was the ugliest woman in the world. One of her sons really looks Indian too. Wonder if there's any connection? Marilyn Bentley

May be something between our two Braggs. How old are you and I am not familiar with the State of Maine but my grandmother, Mabel Augusta Bragg said she was raised around the Canadian border and in or near Bangor. She was born in Augusta, and my father was born in Portland to her and Charles Rackliffe who I know nothing about except she divorced him and moved to Florida with her second husband, Walter John Nichols. She had brothers by the name of Frank, Bud and Asher and she was born 1880's, died 1967 in FL> Never went back to Maine to visit or wrote until just before she died and got a letter from Bud and then he died. If any of this rings a bell write to me at my address weenannybs@webtv.net. My great-grandfather looked like an Indian as well and was very, very tall and thin, over 6'6" as was myfather and grandmother, she was 6" but her Mother, the squaw, was very short, under 5".
Let me hear from you. Where is Vasalborough?

According to my Great grandmother Ellen Bragg there was indian in the Maine line My grandfather also said so. My branch came from the Hampton NH area in the 1870's but the family came from Maine prior to that. There was a house in Point of Pines Me that had been in the family for several generations. that was sold about 1958. Yes they were tall and the women had high cheek bone and sharp features.

Paula, thanks for your information, I feel sure there must be a connection somewher. I'm looking for Shubal Bragg who was a seafaring man from Vasselboro Maine. If you ever come across that name I'd be really interested. I have a picture of my great-great grandma Louisa Bragg Clarke and you'd swear she was an Indian. I could scan it and email it to you. Right now I'm working on a church project and haven't had much time for research...but I'm very interested in your family. Please keep in touch. You can reach me directly at marilyndb@uswest.net
Thanks again, Marilyn

I am looking for information on Elizabeth Bragg who married George Sidebottom in Maine, moved to New Jersey/Massachuttes and had 2 sons my grandfather John Sidebottom and I believe the uncle was James. I have been trying to research info on the Sidebottom and Braggs but have hit a dead end, My Aunt told me today that she did find out that Elizabeth Bragg was from Maine and possiblely indian. Any one with info would be greatly appreciated
Sincerely,
Roberta

Vassalboro is about 7 miles north of Augusta. There is a small cemetery nearby that has some Braggs in it. I have yet to get all the info together but I do have it if you would like it.

Hi Marilyn,
Seems like we may have hit pay dirt..not sure why I am just getting this message..since I posted the query I have re-married..last name now is Larson also had an accident last year and lost an eye which has set me back quite a bit in this search..Ellen Bragg may be a sister of my Grandmother, Mabel Augusta Bragg who was born in the 1880's in Augusta just a few miles out of Vassalboro. She had a large family of siblings and the family must have moved around a lot as she spoke of living in Bangor, Portland, Winslow and other towns..she died in 1967 in St. Augustine, Florida and had just one son, my father, Stanley S. Rackliff born 1911 in Portland..she married a second time to Walter John Nichols and moved to Florida in the 1920's..she showed me a tintype photo of her parents and ggfather was very tall and thin and ggmother was very short and fat and looked just like a squaw..gmother Mabel was very tall, 6'1" and fair skinned but a copper color to her skin..she had beautiful green eyes and her hair was auburn but very dark..she told me both her parents were Indian..?? ggfather looked like he was maybe mixed blood but ggmother looked fullblooded..did not get to keepthe photo after her death and it is now lost by my stepmother who she lived with at the time of her death..if you have anymore info, please let me know..I will try to get up to Maine for sure by next ear/summer. Still not able to see to drive yet..
Thanks,
Barbara Smith-Larson

Do you have a picture of your Indian ancestor?? Seems like my grandmother and grandfather lived and met in the Winslow area..his name was Chas. L. Rackliffe and there is an island named for the family..Rackliff Island near St. George where they originated..or settled when they came over from England....you can write to me at weenannybs@webtv.net..
