Recently I found in Huttons Ambo, NYR, the family of Francis Thackrey and Mary Elmer married Dec 4 1764
They begat
Francis 1765, John 1766, William 1767, Joseph 1769, Mary 1773, Jeremiah 1776, Francis 1780, Harriet 1782, John 1785, Margaret 1787, and Martha 1789.
Joseph 1769 came to Canada with his sons. The rest appeared to stay in NYR. Anyone know of this family?

My mother was born a Thackray and I have researched the family back to Francis and Mary. The family mainly stayed within 10 miles of Huttons Ambo. My mum's family lived in Old Malton.
Let me know if I can help you with information on them. I would be interested on anything you have on the family too.

Regards

Hello Fiona
Delighted to hear from you. My mother was born a thackeray and I think I have traced back to Francis and Mary.
The last time I was in Yorkshire was three years ago and I stayed in Swinton where my ancesters lived for the birth of their children which they baptised at AppletonLeStreet. I could not find Joseph Thackeray's parents around there so I went to York and looked through records in surrounding areas and found them in Huttons Ambo.
My email is Julia@sauter.ca please email me your information and I shall do the same and we can compare notes. Thanks Julia Dalgleish Sauter.

I am descended from John Thackray 1785 (twice!). He founded a firm of engineers in Brawby North Riding - still in existence I think.

Has anyone managed to locate the baptisms of his parents Francis Thackray and Mary Elmer?

Richard

Hi Richard
I have gone through all the Huttons Ambo transcripts and there are no Thackerays. I have gone through AppletonLeStreet transcripts and have nothing, as that is where Francis son Joseph ended up, before Canada.
Where are you located?
I am in Canada and you can email me at julia@sauter.ca, obviously you are more a relative of fiona's line who posted ahead of you.
I have their marriage but nothing before. It is a matter of searching through the records in every surrounding parish, slowly. I think Mary Elmer is of Huttons tho and I have two possible suggestions of parents of her but nothing else.

Hi Julia

Thanks for your reply. I live in (what was) County Durham in England, so not far from North Riding, which means I have had the chance to see a lot of original records.

I also have several possible Mary Elmer links - surname appears also as Helm, just to confuse things. Another relative had Mary's father as New Year Elmer - what a great name! However, I subsequently found she died aged 13 yrs. My current "favourite" is Mary daughter of John Elmer, xn Appleton-le-Street 1745. Hoever, I'm wary of jumping to any conclusions!

Please keep my email julia@sauter.ca handy for any other revelations! Newyear was one of my Elmer suggestions, I have another couple in Huttons I shall send you... but right now I am in Toronto, Canada and will return to southern British Columbia Jan 2 and back at my own computer and can send you my second suggestion who is right in Huttons. I have looked at the Huttons parish records three times back to 1600 and there did seem to be Elmers living in the area, not so Thackeray. I have traveled to England and Scotland many times to search these records.... but not like you!! I stayed in Appleton Le Street last time!
Currently I am following a thought process of a Petrus Thackery who begat a Francis in the Knaresborough area, who was bap 1747, if he had been born earlier he could possibly be the one who married Mary Elmer in 1864. BSmith has posted that lately on Ancestry, you can have a look at it. Any suggestions regarding where Thackeray came from?
Thanks. Julia

Hi Julia

Interesting! I have no idea where the Thackrays originated, though it is a Yorkshire surname and I'm sure they won't be far away. I have a photo of John Thackray if you would like me to send you a copy to you email address (obviously taken in old age). His granddaughter Mary Marshall was mother to two of my great grandfathers - one illegitimate and one legitimate. So I have a double interest!

Hello Richard
I too am a direct decendant of John Thackray through his son, John who was my grandfather's grandfather. The family firm does still exist in Brawby though my Gt grandfather, William moved away to Old Malton where he set up his own engineering business.
I have also been having trouble finding the birth of Francis Thackray and used the Borthwick institute in York who have an excellent "search" facility. The only Francis that they could find born at about the right period was in 1744 in Spennithorne which I understand is quite a distance from Huttons Ambo.
Would be grateful for any info you might have and i will of course let you know what I can that might help you.

Hello Fiona,

Thanks for your reply. I am descended from John Thackray twice through his daughter Hannah who married Mark Marshall. Their eldest daughter Mary Marshall was mother of two of my great grandfathers. Her son Thomas, who was illegitimate (but whose birth and baptism I have never found) was father of paternal grandfather. She then married James Spencer, and their son William was father of paternal grandmother. Thomas took the name Spencer when his mother married (he was probably less than a year old at the time).

I have some things that might be of interest to you, sent by various Thackray descendants over the years. These include photos of John Thackray senior and his son John, and newspaper articles about the Thackray family written by a local historian who I believe was brought up by Hannah. Interesting reading! You may have these already, but if you want copies give me your email and I'll send them to you.
