One of my ancestors Richard, then his son Thomas Richard, then his son RIchard BLIGHT owned a boot factory in Plymouth, Devon - employing 70 people - during the 1800s.

I am trying to trace william mcdowells birth
married Mary Ann Gerry 1814 stoke damerel devon
he was a cordwainer also his son John born 1815
lived in morice st

any help appreciated did they have to have an apprenteship in those days

Sorry but I don't have any of those people on my tree.
I have been looking for a Boot Manufacturers' Guild for Plymouth but no luck yet.
My Blights owned a boot factory - employing about 80 people. Family fortunes dwindled after that. LOL.

Apprenticeships.. I had not thought of looking (only as my Blight was the boss!!!) good idea - perhaps Devon Record Office may have something.

Hi I am also related to Richard Blight who owned a boot factory in Plymouth. He was my Great Great Grandfather on my maternal side. The factory was lost by the family after the death of Richard in the late 1800s.He was the third in the line as we know it of Richard Blights.
