Surnames: Cutler, Bean, Gover, Oakley
Hi,
I am looking for the parents of Thomas Cutler, born around 1730, whereabouts unknown. Thomas Cutler married Martha Bean in 1766 in Portsea, Hayling Is. Martha Bean was born on Hayling Is. in 1742. Their eldest son was William Cutler born abt. 1776 in Portsea. He married Charlotte Gover in 1797. Their son was Charles Cutler born abt 1797 (Portsea) and married Sarah Oakley in 1825 in Newington. They lived in Lambeth where he worked as a carpenter until 1851 when the family emigrated to Australia. My ancestor is their son Charles (b.1827).

Family legend is that the Cutler's were exiled to Hayling Island, but from where or when is unknown. Can anyone help with this?

This may be pure coincidence but I am trying to find the James Cutler born in Portsea c.1788 who became a bricklayer. He married a Sarah (maiden name unknown) around 1815 presumably. His children are Ann, c.1816; William, c.1818; James, c.1820; and Eliza, c.1825.

I see that William Cutler, son of Thomas and Martha Bean had a younger brother James whose dates might tally.

James moved to Newington and is recoded there on the 1841 census [as Cutter] (HO107/1063/3/folio 31, page 11) at Frederick Place, Newington; he was still in Newington in 1851 (HO107/1568/folio 148, page 53) by which time he was 63. I cannot trace him or Sarah in 1861 or 1871 but their son William Henry and his family appear first in Wandsworth and later in Vauxhall, Lambeth in 1871.

Our James Cutler (brother of William) was born April 1789 and died in infancy in July the same year. He was the last child born to Thomas and Martha. However, the information you have given on your James fits in very well with our family. I am now wondering if Thomas and Martha had another son James? I will let you know if I come up with anything.

Just a quick follow-up. I have checked the will of Thomas Cutler (husband of Martha Bean) and he listed his children (7) and these did not include a James. So I would suggest that you would be looking for different parents, but they may well be related.
