From my notes:
In Crosses and Shamrocks. 1997Early 1880's John Downey came to canada with his two brothers from Downpatrick, County Down, Ireland. landed at Quebec City , seperated and never met again. One to the West... other to Southern Ont.John went to ByTown met and married Jane Smith (also Irish) Had 2 children there, moved to Goulbourn, two more children. 1839 left Goulbourn > up the Ottawa to what is now called Downey's Bay, built a shanty on the shore & spent first winter there. Moved inland to what is now called Downey Lake.. Records say John was given 800 Acres by the gov't.

One of his grandsons was Ned Downey whose 1st wife Lily Nephin who is in my extended family.

Hi: I am also a descendant of John Downey (Sr.) and Jane Smith. John Sr. immigrated with his three brothers approx. 1825. John Downey (Jr) was married three times. Some of the info in the Crosses & Shamrock book is incorrect.

There is alot of information in the church records, St. Alphonsus RC church, Chapeau, & St. Joseph's, St. Bridget's, and also the Pontiac County Archives, Shawville, Que.
Hope this helps! Happyhunting.
