Hi Paula! I am the great granddaughter of Ida Mae Hebb (1974/5-`9`9) of Tucker County West Virginia. Her father is William P Hebb (her mother is a Lipscomb) (1832-1919), his father is John Hebb (1796-1880?) (he married a Bowman) and his father is William Hebb,1757-1835), a british soldier who joined the continental army and served as a member of General George Washington's private bodyguard and who married General Washington's great niece, Jemima Washington. William and Jemima settled and raised their family in Virginia/West Virginia and are buried there today. I have a fair amount of information on the Hebb Family. Please feel free to contact me.

My mother was Nellie Marie (Hebb) Cleavenger of West Virginia. Her father was Paul Emory Hebb and mother was Pauline (Messenger) Hebb. Nellie had one brother (David) who died at birth, and one younger sister (Hilda Mae [Hebb] Poling.

hi mike, james alrick hebb was born in virginia in 1858, the third of fifteen children, to william poole hebb (1832-1919) and margaret lipscomb (1836-1910) and married sarah catherine james on sep 6, 1880. sarah catherine james was born in 1859 and died 1911 and was the daughter of ephraim h and sarah dumire james. they had at least one son, named harry allen (1883-1953) and at least two or three daughters, whose names are unknown to me. james alrick hebb was a large man who once swam the cheat river on a fifty cent bet. (have you ever seen this river?)

all of the information i have for the parents of james indicates that james was likely born in/around what is now preston or tucker county, west virginia as his father was born in erwin, in preston county, and married margaret lipscomb in aurora, west virginia and both william and margaret are buried in the fairview cemetary in st. george. (ida may, who was the 12th child, was born in st. george and this may very well be the birthplace of james.) i have margaret lipscomb's birth place listed only as "virginia" however, i believe that she too was from the tucker/preston county area as there were many lipscombs settled in this area on limestone mountain and many of them are buried in the cemetary at the limestone church. margaret's parents are levi lipscomb (1798-1878) and berlinda holbert hutchinson (c 1805-1868) and although i've been to this cemetary i do not recall off hand if levi and/or berlinda are buried there but for any lipscomb ancestor it is well worth visiting).

i also have a notation on james which indicates that he was listed on the 1880 tucker county census as "levi a" and i wonder if this might have been a nickname or if there is some confusion between james (#3 born) and arthur levi, (#13 born) in 1876. i am not sure what to make of this bit of information.

i have the names and birthdates of all fifteen children born to william and margaret. i also have spouses names for all except for one of these children (the one exception is adelia born in tucker county, in 1863). this means that at least 14 of the 15 children grew to adulthood which is quite remarkable for that time.

several siblings of james' also married into the james family. in addition to sarah catherine (james' wife) jemima catherine hebb married samuel loman james and cordelia v hebb married samuel h james. my great grandmother, ida may, married john wesley white and ida may and james' sister berlinda jane married george william white.

william poole hebb, father to james and ida may, lived about 4 miles from st george where he owned 100 acres of land. william was a union soldier and member of the 'home guard'. he was taken prisoner during the civil war but later escaped.

if you are interested in further research of your hebb, james, and lipscomb family ancestry a good place to focus would be in the preston and tucker county courthouses and local cemetaries where these families lived in great numbers during the 1800 and early 1900s. you will also likely encounter relatives still living there today. i was at the tucker county courthouse a few years ago where a portrait of an ancestor of mine (daniel c adams) who was the first county assessor in tucker county, still hangs. the current county assessor (a/o a few years back) is robert david hebb and the address is tucker county courthouse, 215 1st street, suite 1, parsons, west virginia 26287 (304-478-3727).

finally, i have a copy of a photograph taken in 1901/4 and is the 50th wedding celebration of william poole hebb and margaret lipscomb. included in this photograph are james alrick hebb, sarah catherine (james) hebb, their son harry allen hebb, and the two and possibly three daughters of james and sarah, and the child of one of the daughters.

i also have copies of photographs of gravestones of various hebb family and a photograph of margaret lipscomb hebb with seven of her eight daughters. (another reason why i think adelia hebb did not survive until adulthood as she is the only daughter missing from this photograph which was taken when the daughters' were adults).
