Any connection to the Sousa children/grandchildren that might have gone to Allandale Elementary School, Hamilton or Bret Harte Jr. High and Fremont High School, all in Oakland? Cheers, Duane D.

I am very interested in the message you posted on Ancestry with the referance to John Vierra and to the listing of the French question.

My Grandfather, John (Jack) Vierra (could have been Vieira) 3/16/1889-10/18/1955 was son to Antone (Tony) Vierra, & Mary (could have been Maria) Vierra (maiden name Freites) (could have been Frates).

John listed on his 1920 Census record that his mother was born in France and spoke french.

John was married to Helen Santos Oliver who was previously married to a Souza and my father is half brother to at least 2 Souza's (could have been Sousa).

Could you please look at any of the birth dates or date of death of the family members you are researching and get back to me with names matched to dates? It also might be helpful you you have any middle names as it seams as the Portugese like to switch middle names with last names in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

What I have found in my searching is that there is sometimes confusion between last names and middle names as well as how each person is actulay related to the next. I have also found that there seams to be a lot of devorces deaths in that same period just due to the hard life of tamming the west.

The Joseph Francis Souza listed was the brother of my great grandfather Manuel Francis Souza b. 1880. There brothers were Enos b. 1889 and John b. 1884. They were the sons of Manuel C. Souza b. 1858 and Maria DeMello. All of the sons were born in San Lorenzo, CA

The other names you listed are familar. Manuel Francis Souza was married to Annie Freitas ( Frates ) from San Pablo, CA . She was the daughter of Joseph Freitas and Maria Oliviera ( sometimes listed as Oliver ).

You mentioned a 1920 census record. Where in California?

My biological great-grandfather was named Joseph Sousa. He was born in 1892, possibly in Honolulu HI, and died about 1956, in Oakland CA. I am looking for his parent's information. He had a daughter in 1914, but left her mother in 1916. Any connection to your family, or if you have any info, please let me know. Thanks.
