Vickers in NORTH CAROLINA

My name is James Brandon Vickers and I live in Rocky Mount (Edgecombe County), North Carolina, USA. I was born 17 Sept. 1970. I am looking for information regarding my grandfather, Macdonald Vickers (or M.D.) , and our line of the Vickers here in NC. As far as I know, we have been in the South in general and North Carolina in particular, since we got "off the boat".
My father was one of fourteen children of Macdonald and Marie Wells Vickers. All except one are alive today. Their names are as follows: Marvin Eugene, Joseph Edward, Eleanor Marian, Carolyn Vickers Tank, Franklin Delano (deceased), Cordell Hull, Brenda Vickers Hart, Harold Cooley, James Buchanan (my father), John Robert, Frances Vickers Riley, Harry Truman, Patricia Ann (Vickers) Hammock, and Jerry Wayne. M.D. was also married once before my grandfather and had two children, Macdonald Jr. (deceased), and Margaret. That makes a total of sixteen children!!
Macdonald’s parents were named Joseph and Flora Whitfield Vickers. He was born near Durham, NC in 1897 and died in Elm City, NC in 1970. He was one of ten children, whose names were as follows: Maggie Vickers Cooke (1885-1973), who had nine children; Bud Vickers, who had three children; Jethro Vickers (1890-1969), who had four children; Eulie Vickers, who had one child, Mattie Vickers Gainey (1892-1987), Roy Vickers, Mala Vickers Massey (1903-1995), Joseph Otis Vickers (1906-1987), and Percy D. Vickers (1901-1979). Though I do not know the birth/death dates for all of them, I am sure they are all deceased.
My grandfather apparently became estranged from his family, and although they lived less than two hours away, my father and his siblings did not know much about their family. With the rise of the internet I hope to find out all I can for all my first cousins and for my child (who will be arriving as yet another Vickers on or about 28 June 2000).
I would appreciate any information that any North Carolina Vickers, or any other Vickers, can convey. Who knows - maybe one of my dad’s cousins will read this!!

I am the daughter of Roy Harold Vickers from Chapel Hill, N.C. I do not know if he is of any relation to your family. I am searching for him now and was just wondering if or maybe he could be any relation. He was born around 1938. If so please contact me if you know any information. He was married to Verdie Ethel Summerour. Thanks

Linda,
I am not sure if Roy Harold Vickers is related to my family, but he could be if he was the son of my grandfather's brother Roy. However, I am in possession of a lawyer's letter dated September 15, 1980 regarding the disposition of the property of one of my grandfather's other brothers, Percy D. Vickers. This letter is the only reason that I know all of the names of the 9 other brothers and sisters of my grandfather, M.D. Vickers.
Roy Vickers is listed in this letter as having no children. I have been unable to find any record in the Social Security Death Index of three of M.D.'s siblings, including Roy. Maybe Roy Harold is the son of "my" Roy?? I cannot be sure.
I am going to make a trip up to the Durham and Orange County Public Libraries in about two weeks. When and if I find out more, I will be sure to get in touch with you if you send your e-mail address.

Hi Brandon,

My name is Karen Lindsey. My grandmother's gg grandfather was a Wyley Vickers who lived in coffee county Ga. We have a newspaper artcile that says he was in North Carolina. I am not sure if he lived in North Carolina or if he sailed to North Carolina from some were else. After moving to coffee county he helped settle the area. He was involved with a lot of the Indian removal durning that time. I know the Douglas, Ga Library has a book on him, but I have not read it. He was a big land owner it that county. I hope this helps out. Let me Know what you find out.
