On the 1850 census of Orange County, North Carolina, First District, page 187A there is the following SYKES family:
Sykes, Allen - age 55 - M - Laborner - born Orange NC - cannot R/W
Sykes, Patsy - age 48 - F - - born Orange NC - cannot R/W
Sykes, James - age 21 - M - Laborner - born Orange NC
Sykes, Milley - age 23 - F - born Orange NC - cannot R/W
Smith, John - age 5 - M - Orange NC
Could this John Smith be your John G. Sykes. Was Milley Sykes married, is Sykes her maiden name and now she is living back with her parents and her son, who later took his mothers maiden name? Maybe Smith was a poor recording by the enumerator or the name has been extracted wrong? Maybe this James and Milley are married?
It's also interesting, on page 261B (same census) there is John & Sally family listed:
Sykes, John - 57 - M - Laborner - N Carolina
Sykes, Sally - 49 - F - - N Carolina - cannot Read/Write
Sykes, Jane - 16 - F - - N Carolina - attend school
Sykes, Cornelia - 14 - F - -N Carolina - attend school
Please let me know what you think. I would like to identify this family as well. Thanks....
