Trying to figure out the relationship between David T. Butler,an Elizabeth or Martha Jane Poiondexter and Angelina Krise. Family lore has David 's first wife as a Poindexter. I have one document that shows his wife as being an Elizabeth Poindexter. But, Louisa County marriages show David T. married a Martha Jane Poindexter c. 1842. His second wife is listed on documents as Angelina Krise. Elizabeth/Martha Jane and Angelina are supposed to have been sisters? David and Angelina eventually moved to Scottsville, Va and they are buried there. David and 1st wife had two or three children, Robert L., Sarah Elizabeth and Martha Jane.

As you will note, Martha Jane did have a sister named Elizabeth POINDEXTER, but she married a Gooch. She also had a sister, Mary Ann, who married a Landrum. Her other five siblings were brothers. There is no Angelina in the family. So Anglina KRISE may well have been David's second wife, but she was not Martha Jane's sister.

Do you have more information on the family? We have almost nothing on David and would appreciate details. We also have nothing forward on David and Martha Jane POINDEXTER BUTLER'S children, Robert L. and Sarah Elizabeth. We do not show a third child, Martha Jane BUTLER. As you can tell from Charles will, if she was a child of David and Martha Jane BUTLER'S, she was dead prior to her grandfather's death in 1851. Where did your information about her come from?

Robin, Thank you for responding to my query - I have not been to the Louisa courthouse since 1981 and I was not aware of the Poindexter-Butler relationship at the time I visited there. So thank you for referring me to the will of Charles Poindexter!
As you've stated, David T. married Martha Jane Poindexter c. 1842 in Louisa County. I also had found the two children you mention, Robert L. Butler and Sarah Elizabeth Butler. David remarried (c. 1851) Angelina Krise (from Orange Co.?) and they had several children - so far I've documented; Sophia Angeline, William David, Mary Ella, Preston Julian, Phillip and John Wesley. There also may have been a Joseph. My husband's GGrandfather is John Wesley Butler. It is reported on his death certificate that he was born in Louisa County, VA on 21 March 1861, however his tombstone in Scottsville gives the year as 1862. On Sarah Elizabeth's death certificate, the name given for her mother is Elizabeth Poindexter. Sarah Elizabeth was very tiny - not much over four feet tall(I have one picture of her). She lived with John Wesley and his wife, Ella Carson Phillips, at the Butler farm on Route 6 east of Scottsville, until her death in 1938. Aunt Sophia also spent a lot of time at the farm in her later years. David T. Butler, Angelina, Sarah Elizabeth and Sophia Angeline are all buried at the Mt. Zion Churchyard in Esmont, VA. Preston Julian and his family are buried there, too. John Wesley died on 12 January 1946 in Richmond, Virginia at the home of his daughter, Agnes Angeline Butler Gianniny.
John Wesley and Ella had three children, Claude Phillips b. 1897, Lindsay Wesley b. 1899 and Agnes Angeline b. 1902. Claude Phillips Butler was my husband's grandfather.
That should get you started with our line - send me any other questions you may have. I ran across a deed dated 4 December 1900, where Ella "buys out" other family members who have an interest in the farm property in Albemarle. Three names I am not familiar with are Walker P. Butler, Henry W. Butler and James C. Butler. I've wondered if they are possibly brothers of David or perhaps heirs of children who predeceased David? Do you recognize any of these names? How great to share this information - I hope to hear from you again.

I'm elated that I just come across this thread and have been able to confirm a lot of my information. As for Martha Jane Poindexter Butler's descendants, Robert L. Butler is my great-great-grandfather. Many of his descendants still live in Louisa County. Robert L. Butler first married Angelina Gibson and had Julia Lee, Alice M., and Robert N. Angelina's mother was a Krise. Then Robert married Luella Wayland and had Catherine Lee (Katie) and William David. They grew up in the Green Springs area of Louisa County and the property adjoined Doctors Road.

I am descended from Julia Butler's children. She married Beauregard Butler and had many children, one of whom was my grandmother Lillie. Lille married Sam Vogt and they had a home off Doctors Road as well.

Katie Butler also married a Vogt, and he was Eddie Vogt the brother of Sam. They had many children, too, and also grew up off Doctors Road. Three of their children still live in Louisa and I have regular contact with them. One is Raymond Vogt, one is Eddie Vogt, Jr., and one is Elnor Vogt Whitlock.

By the way, the third child of David and Martha Jane Butler wasn't born until after Charles Poindexter's will was written. That's why she is not named in the will.

Would love to have future contact with you.

I am the current Poindexter Descendants Association Database Coordinator. I would very much like to have direct contact with you to discuss further your family's Poindexter connections. My e-mail is robindaviet at cs dot com.

By the way, David and Martha Jane Butler did not have a third child. A child could not have possibly been born to them after Charles M. Poindexter's will was written as Charles makes the following statement in his will "and my grand children Robert Butler and Sarah Butler the children of my deceased daughter Martha Butler."

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Robin BUTLER Daviet

Robin,
It seems that you have more information about the Poindexter connection to our Butler line than me. I don't know that I can offer anything further, but you are welcome to email me at bsbutler75@aol.com, if you have any questions.
Regards,
Brenn

I'm responding to your inquiry about who Ella (John Wesley Butler's wife) "buys out" from the 3 family members who have an interest in the farm property in Albemarle County, Va. All 3 people (Walker P. Butler, Henry W. Butler, and James C. Butler) are David T. Butler's grandchildren through his daughter Mary Ella Butler, who married James Wickliffe Butler, son of Matthew Butler, and died
sometime between June 1880 (she is on 1880 census) and 1889, when her widowed husband remarried in May 1889. The marriage record shows that he was widowed. So their 4 children included the 3 mentioned above and they lived with their new mom. AS of now, I cannot find a record of her death or of where James Wickliffe Butler was living after 1880. James was the son of Matthew and Mary A [Krise] Butler.

Thank you for sharing this information. I'm curious, do you have an opinion on what the relationship was between David T. Butler and Matthew Butler? Brothers? Cousins? Other?

I wish I DID know the relationship between David .T Butler (1817) and Matthew Butler (1817). My opinion is that they may have been brothers. I haven't been able to find David T. Butler's parents or siblings. Does anyone have a clue?

Matthew married Mary Anne Krise (b 1826) and David married Angelina Krise (b. 1833). There was another Krise girl named Martha Jane (b. 1829). I think their parents are Elizabeth (1803) and John P. Krise (b. 1807). Not sure. Martha Jane Krise married William Gibson, and their daughter married David T. Butler's son Robert L. Butler.

David T. Butler lived on Doctors Road in Louisa County but later moved to Esmont near Scottsville and was buried there. Why did he go to the Scottsville area? It seems all the other Butlers were in Orange/Louisa.

David T. Butler once sold his property in Louisa to John J. Butler, whose ancestry I mention in the next paragraph, so I wonder if he was related to that Butler line, too. Maybe John J. was another brother. Until we can find information on David's father and siblings, this is all conjecture.

John J. Butler (b. 1824) was the father of Lee Beauregard Butler's (b. 1862,), Malinda H. Butler, Betty Jackson Butler, Nathan T. Butler, and Nora Butler. John J. Butler's father was John R. (Jackson) Butler (b. 1785). I would love to know the ancestors of this family line as well as David T. Butler's line, and whether the two intersect.

John R. Butler married Mary Tate in 1810 in Louisa County, Va. I am a descendant of both John R. Butler AND David T. Butler, so would love to know where (if) these 2 families intersect. Would love to hear from others on this.
