Family Tree Maker 2005

Family Tree Maker 2005

Currently I have a version of FTM 2005. It has worked wonderfully for the last few years.

I now get an error that states that it is unable to read the files or something to that affect.

It relays to me to remove the software and reinstall. I have done this a few times and it allows me to bring my GED file into it. When I go to run a pdf report it states that there is a problem and never fixes itself.

Before I consider upgrading, what is the problem?

Will the newest version of FTM 2011 read my older GED file?

I have tried Legacy 7.4 but have had problem with reading all my Source notations. I was very happy at earlier with FTM 2005 but was unsure of the upgrades.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I, too have used many older versions of FTM right from the first ever to have come out and had no problems with them. Also, I found them much simpler to use and much more user friendly than the latest version 2011 which I have just purchased. I am having so much trouble with 2011 and find it almost unusable on Windows Vista. So, if you have Vista then I would think most carefully before purchasing 2011. I am have 2011 running on a Netbook which has Windows 7 and so far this is running Ok.

baokbob,

What is the exact wording of the Error Message?

What are you trying to do when you see that error message?

Rose,

What problems are you having with Vista and Version 2011? Besides learning the new User Interface, you should not have any issues with 2011.

Are you running Family Tree Maker As Administrator (a Vista feature)?

Rose,

I'm running 2011 on Vista with absolutely no problems.

It states:

"Critical components are missing, please unistall and reinstall. Your data files have not been affected."

This is all it says and I have uninstalled and reinstalled various times.

Once I reinstall it, it opens up at that time with no problems.

The problem is once I go to get back in it, it gives the statement above.

Bob,

Are you using Vista or Windows 7?

If so, please Run Family Tree Maker As Administrator.

If you have re-installed the program, please re-register it.
