My grandmother, Martha Helen COLLINS/COLLINSWORTH Combs was part Cherokee. Her parents were Emory and Cynthia Ann COMBS Collinsworth of Morgan, Breathitt and Perry Cos., Ky. Her father shortened their name to Collins at some point in time. I am trying to trace their family. Emory was the s/o Edward Fanny Collinsworth.

I have read information stating that some of the Collinsworth folks changed their name to Collins. Who were the first to do that? I have been looking for information on Orian Moses Collinsworth, born 1816,who married Maranza Loe in NC in 1838. They later moved to LA and died there. I have not found any information about his parents or his siblings. Please help. Pat Huish

Pat, My gr-grandparents were Emery (Emory) Cynthia Ann COMBS Collinsworth (Collins) I have not found Emery's parents yet, but am working on it. At some point in time my gr-grandparents changed their name from Collinsworth to Collins. Why I do not know. My grandmother, their daughter Martha Ellen, never mentioned the name Collinsworth, she always said her maiden name was Collins. Martha's son, my uncle, doe not ever remember the name Collinsworth being mentioned either. So it is a puzzle. My grandparents were from Breathitt Co, Ky, also of Morgan and Perry. I think they moved around a bit. If I come up with anything, I will let you know. Stella

My grandfather, Wiley Collinsworth came from Ivyton//Salyersville KY., area in about 1918, he moved to Wa state at that time. He was married to Gracie Prater in 1895 in Ky and his marriage license is signed Collinsworth , but when he moved to WA he changed it to Collins, we're not sure why either. B>ut did hear that one of his brothers moved to a different county in Ky and changed his name too. Any information on his dad Elijah would be greatly appreciated. He was married to Alsie Jane Bayes in 1869, and he died in Ivyton, ky 1933.
