This is not my line but I have some information on that family if you need it.

One of the relations posted a family story that he believed his grandfather was a Comanche Indian son of Quanah Parker and Mahcheetawookey who had been adopted by Sanford Francis Yarbrough - a nephew of Sheriff Milt Yarberry.

It is not true. His grandfather was born to John Milton Yarberry (1854-1945) in 1895 in Pueblo Colorado.

Those Yarberrys (Yarbroughs) descend from John Yarbery (1815 TN-1845 AR.

Thank you! Excited to hear your information. Was the last name originally spelled Yarbery? I have a photograph of the tombstone that was made for Milton here in Albuquerque. It is spelled Yarbery. I was also interested in any history about who might have had the tombstone made. He listed "erected by Robert A Hardin".
I am interested in any information on Milton that anyone might have.
Regards!

The original name was Yarbrough or Yarborough and there are 47 spelling variations according to the Yarbrough National Genealogy adn Historical Society archivists. It is also spelled Yerbrugh in England.

I do not know the Hardin who erected the tombstone. I have seen the photo of it.

This is what I have on those families - I have the name spelled as Yarbrough in my files:

I completely hate it when people say the Yarbrough's part of the family came first. The Yarberry, now one of the smallest parts of the family, came first around 880 AD in Sweden. Then move into England around 989 AD and some where in that time the yarbroughs broke away and moved to another town. How I got this knowlegde is the Yarberry ruins on the Eastern part of England. I offhand can't remember the name of any of the town around it or where a got the knowledge.

On Milton John Yarberry's tombstone Yarberry was misspelled. Milton looks like my grandpa's twin. I have a picture of Milton hanging on my wall. There is some talk that he is not Yarberry but a Armstrong however the papers that was obtained in Walnut Ridge states he was born a Yarberry.

The family history book my grandpa has starts with the tale of James Yarberry coming to the New World around 1760 and the ship wrecks in a storm (he is the only survivor)and he fell from the crow's nest to the deck. He broke his leg and was in the ocean from many days until he washed up on the shore. The end of the story talks about him living with Indains for awhile and moving into an England settlement.

Due to inquiries on line, Wikipedia now lists a bio for Milton Yarberry. Many parts of the bio are taken from several sources, at least a couple from books published about the old west. Would be interesting to know the real story. The wikipedia post states that the first elected sheriff of Albuquerque was not in fact a Yarberry at all, but changed his name to Yarberry after bringing shame to his family as they were prominent citizens of the community. I would be most interested in obtaining a copy (scan) of Mr. Yarberry's photograph.

Cory,
Sorry if I offended you regarding your name of Yarberry. It would be great if you could post the title of the Yarberry book, with its publisher, and author's name.

Plus, it would be helpful if a male of your Yarberry family would consider thaking the Yarbrough DNA Project test. The project is open to all spellings.

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/yarbrough

About 20 have taken the test and these are grouped into 5 different linages. Including Rev Peter Yerburgh who traces his linage back to Germund the Danish Viking.

I would be happy to assist anyone wanting to take the test at a discount.
