I think you find your Muhlenber co. American Indian Ancestery with the Brown's. My Great Grandfather had American Indian ancestery through his mother Mary (Brown) Johnson (or Johnston in some records) She was married to my Great Great grandfather John Johnson (or Johnston). Their son (my great grandfather) was Noah Carlos Johnson (or Johnston) born in Todd Co. His son was Earnest Estil Johnson born in Todd Co. Muhlenberg co. used to be part of Todd co.

Please let me know if you run into John Johnson ( or Johnston). For now my trail has ended there.

Lisa

Family tradition says that my gggrandmother, Susan(a) Brown was a Cherokee but I have been unable to find her parents, much less verify the Cherokee ancestry. She was born abt. 1845 in KY, according to census records, and was the 3rd wife of my gggrandfather, George C. Coburn, by 1870 when they showed up in Menifee Co. on the census. Their oldest child on that census was born in 1865 and George's youngest child on the census by his 2nd wife was born in 1863. George was from Floyd Co. and was living there on the 1860 census, so Susan(a) may have been from there as well.

I suspect that Susan(a)'s father may have been named Aaron and I also suspect she was related in some way to a David Brown of Menifee and, later, Montgomery Cos.

I would welcome any information about this Brown family, particularly any that will prove or disprove the Cherokee connection.

I have a little info on Stewarts up to the early 1800's in Muhlenberg co. KY. I have not been able to get past my g g grandfather Lewis Stewart. I suspect American Indian ancestory in this line, because the family referred to that leg of the family as black dutch. It gets difficult at the that point, because he had at least 3 wives and children by them all. I'll need to look at my notes and get back to you with specific dates etc..(I have hectic work deadlines at the moment). Lisa Gregory Kinney

Stewarts past 1860's in Muhlenberg County KY

I have some info on Stewarts past the 1860's, but it
is limited. My gg
grandfather Lewis Stewart (possibly James Lewis
Stewart) has been
somewhat of a mystery. I have no idea who his
siblings or parents were.

1 Lewis Stewart (Steward on at least one census) b.
abt. 1828 KY
(married at least three times Ruth E. Smith being one
of his wives is
not proven, but I believe it is true.)
s. Ruth E. Smith b. 1827 KY m. 2/17/1847

2 Matilda C. Stewart

2 H.M. Stewart b. 1848

2 Mary E. Stewart b. 1850
s. Rebecca Adkins b. 1828 NC

2 Mary C. Stewart b. 1855 KY

2 William C. Stewart b. 1857 KY

2 Martha Stewart b. 1858 KY

2 Laura A. Stewart b. 1859
s. Nancy Elizabeth McElvain (McIlvain) b.8/18/1842
d.4/6/1914

2 James Andrew Stewart b. 12/18/1870 Muhlenberg
Co. Ky

s. Ida Mae (Birdie) Gregory

2 Abram Barnett Stewart b. 7/19/1872 Muhlenberg
Co. KY

s. Ella Morris

s. Virginia Corley (not maiden name)

2 John Lewis Stewart b. 1874 Muhlenberg Co. KY
(my line)

s. Amanda Gish

s. Mary Beatrice Grubbs

2 William Robert Stewart b. 3/4/1876 Muhlenberg
Co. KY

2 Jesse Stewart b. 11/1878 Muhlenberg Co. KY

2 James Edmon Stewart b. 1879 Muhlenberg Co. KY

s. Fanny Davenport

2 Thomas Earl Stewart b. 4/4/1881 Muhlenberg Co.
KY

s. Verdie M. Humphrey

s. Ada Wiggins

s. Margaret Sorrles

Lewis was discribed as having gray eyes, black hair
and a dark
complexion. He was 5'8 3/4" tall. My only clues to
possible American
Indian Ancestry are his looks and the fact that the
family referred to
him as "Black Dutch".

If you find a connection...let me know. Lisa Gregory Kinney

I have a Mahala McGraw in my tree. My gg grandmother who was reportedly part cherokee. The only info I have been able to dig up on her was her marriage record from Rowan county ky. in 1886 to William M. Tyree( also reportedly 1/2 cherokee!)I cannot find anything about either of them any where else My g grandmother's birth certificate has Mahala as being from Carter county and William as being from menifee county.Mahala'a parents were J.H. Mcgraw and Mary Allen. The trail ends here, can't find info on any of them!
Also on my other side of the tree( sparks, rowe, mcmillion)
my gg grandmother Amanda Mcmillion-Rowe claimed to be 3/4 cherokee! although we can't find her any where other than from the date of her marriage forward.

If you have any info I would greatly appreciate it! thanks
Bev.
