Suzanne-- My grandparents were Stephania (Stella) Rutowitz who married John (Jan) Sylvester Minkel. They emigrated from Poland to America in 1914. Their children were: Eva Marie Minkel (1915 - still living), Amelia (Emily) Minkel (1918 - 1998), and my father William Martin Minkel (1919 - 1985). They first lived in Canonsburg, PA, then Langeloth, PA and finally settled in Ambridge, PA (Beaver County). One of John Minkel's brothers was Wladyslaw Minkiel. Several of his brothers used the spelling Minkiel. One brother may have used "Menkel". There may have been a brother Victor Minkiel and a sister Mary Minkel. Most of the family lived in Ambridge, PA area.

I found in Ellis Island Records, a Jan Minkel who came over October 13, 1913 from Breman--his city of origin is Lasli, Russia. He was 33, married a laborer. His last point of contact was a father-in-law, Michael Rutowicz? Got to be him! He was enroute to Elizabethport? NJ to see brother-in-law Kosh?(hard to read) Rutowicz. He had a whooping $235 dollard on him which was a lot of money at that time. He was fair-skinned with Brown hair and Blue eyes and was 5'8" tall.

Yes, that's my Grandfather. Thanks for the look-up -- I didn't have those facts about his father-in-law and brother-in-law. That's gives me some new clues to work on. My Grandmother (his wife) was a Rutowicz. Thanks again.

Hello Stan,

Thanks a million for that piece of info about Lasli. I searched all over the internet for that town and couldn't find it. Anything further that you can tell me about Lasli would be greatly appreciated!

My great grandfather was Michael Rutowicz, born in Klewy, Poland, near the Lithuanian border. He came to U.S. (Pittston, PA?) in 1909. Write me at my e-mail address if you are interested in this info.

Hi John,

I wrote you at your e-mail address but you didn't reply. Perhaps my e-mail got caught in your junk mail filter.
