Hello i am trying to trace family of my GG/Grandfather born Orleans New Orleans Louisianna 1847. His father was William Batson married Grace ??. I live in Australia & have no idea where or when they arrived in U.S.A.. I do know they ended there lives in England.
Williams siblings are as follows(not all went back to england):

Joseph W 1838
Mary E 1847
Sarah Ann 1837
Grace Louise 7th Dec.1844
Mary Jane 16th May 1843
Hoping for any possible help. My father(Colin Paine Batson)is now in his mid 80's & would love to go to his maker at least knowing a little of his Family.Thanking all


The 1850 Fed Census has their home as New Orleans Municipality 2 Ward2, Orleans Louisiana

What was your great-great-grandfather's name?

Why do you think his parents weren't born in the US?

What is the source for his parents' names?

There was a marriage in 1860 for a Sarah A. Batson to a Sewell Warner in New Orleans

Lived: 1850 census New Orleans Municipality2,Ward2 ,Orleans, Louisiana....
American Passport ..... issued New Orleans 1873 wine & tobacco merchant.
Died .......1896 Toxeth Park Liverpool Lancashire England.

My G/Grandfathers marriage certificate showed William Paine Batson Hotel owner Liverpool,as his Father. I searched back from there finding him born in U.S.A., Birth index showed
William Batson & Grace Baker as his parents.

Some of the children’s birth records are listed in the Orleans Parish birth index. The parents’ names are listed as William Nicholas Batson and Grace Baker.

Birth certificates can be ordered from the Louisiana State Archives with the information below:

Birth certificates from that time period weren't quite the same as the ones we have now. They generally included the parents' names and the country of birth (sometimes the city of birth), and sometimes included the address of the parents.

I also found obituaries for Grace Louise and Mary Jane. The print isn't the clearest, but I can email you a .pdf copy of it if you want. Here's what it says:

19 March 1848 The Daily Picayune New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana

On Sunday evening, the 12th instant, at half-past 5 o'clock, of scarlet fever, MARY JANE, second daughter of Grace and William N. Batson, aged 4 years and 10 months.

Also, on Saturday, the 18th instant, at noon, of scarlet fever, GRACE LOUISE, third daughter of the above Grace and William N. Batson, aged 3 years and 3 months.

The friends of the family are requested to attend the funeral This morning at 10 o'clock, from the corner of Race and Religious streets.
