Johann Mathias KOHN (1839-1919) m. Susannah REINERT (1848-1887) in Kansas in 1874. (They had emigrated from Germany separately, in 1865.06.30 from Wasserliesch near Trier and in 1867.09.02 from Igel near Trier, respectively.) They moved with two small children to La Crosse after 1879 and before 1881, after which they had three additional children. Perhaps the draw to the La Crosse area was that Susannah had grown to adulthood in Caledonia MN (1865-1872), or perhaps Johann Mathias had a brother who lived in the La Crosse area and who had invited Johann to work on a dairy farm. By family story, Johann worked on a dairy farm, but I do not believe he owned it. ). Our family history says that Susanna Reinert-Kohn died in La Crosse of heat stroke on 4 August 1887, and she is buried there in St. Joseph Cemetery. After her death, Johann moved back to Kansas with his five children.

It may be this family or the family of a Johannes Mathias KOHN (1840-1888)=Josephine BECKER (1844-1900) "whose residence was 115 South Ninth Street" (La Crosse Republican & Leader, 1887.08.05.)

At the same time, the family of Joannes Mathias KOHN and Josephine BECKER lived in the La Crosse area. They apparently married 1865.09.18 in La Crosse, and had 11 children from 1866 through 1886. I believe this family was not related to the KOHN=REINERT family, however I have no knowledge of their home(s) of emigration, presumably in Germany, or of their parental families.

I believe that I may be able to help you with the Kohn family. I am related to Josephine(Becker) and Mathias Kohn. They are my grandmothers grandparents. If you need any assistance with information please let me know and if I don't have the information I can always get it from my grandmother.

Thank you!

Hello Ms. Comeau,

I do not have reliable information on the KOHN=BECKER family. It was available as a GEDCOM via RootsWeb or some similar online family tree service. I have not attempted any direct corroboration, although I have come across some corroborative information while I researched my own family, the KOHN=REINERT. I believe the families are not related, but I have not proved or disproved that.

If you have any information --substantiated or not-- about the _origins_ of Joannes Matthias KOHN and Josephine BECKER, please contact me.

Best regards,
Thomas Kohn

Joannes Matthias KOHN (b. 1840, d. abt 16 Oct 1888 LaCrosse WI USA), whose death was documented in an obituary on October 16, 1888 in the La Crosse Chronicle, reading in full: "Matthias Kohn whose prostration by paralysis was mentioned on Sunday morning died at half-past ten o'clock yesterday. He was sixty years of age, a native of Germany and has lived in this city since 1855. He leaves a wife and eleven children." He was the owner of a tavern and perhaps a hotel or rooming house in the same building. His address and business are documented in the LaCrosse City Directories of approx. 1873 through 1879. He was deeded two 40-acres tracts of land in LaCrosse county in 1858. The following is only an unproven theory: He may have been born 2 Mar 1840 in Deutschland, Rheinland-Pfalz, Kreis Saarburg, Wasserliesch 54322, a child of Margarethe KOHN (abt 1820 to abt 1880), then unmarried living in Oberbillig Germany, near Wasserliesch.

His wife, Josephine BECKER (b. 8 Jun 1844 Deutschland, Rheinland-Pfalz, Kreis Bad Kreuznach, Roth 55442, d. 1900 USA, Wisconsin, La Crosse county, La Crosse) [no documentation] was the daughter of Franz Casper BECKER (b. 16 Jun 1815 Deutschland, Baden-Württemburg, Kreis Mannheim, Mannheim 68159-309, d. 21 Jan 1883 USA, Wisconsin, La Crosse county, La Crosse, bur. 24 Jan 1883 USA, Wisconsin, La Crosse county, La Crosse) and Helena Schmitt (b. 1817 Deutschland, Rheinland-Pfalz, Kreis Bad Kreuznach, Roth 55442, d. 1850 USA, Illinois, Jo Daviess county, Galena) [no documentation on either parent]. Josephine had two siblings, Helen and Cyrus or Francis Xavier [no documentation]. I had received an offer of information from Cindy Bistodeau <bistodeau@yahoo.com>, but she provided no follow-up beyond what I had already.

Joannes KOHN and Josephine BECKER married 18 Sep 1865 USA, Wisconsin, La Crosse county, La Crosse and had eleven children:
Katherine (1836-abt 1930)
Josephine (1868-abt 1930)
Charlote (1870-abt 1935)
Helen (1872-abt 1935)
Clara (1874-abt 1935)
Matt (1876-abt 1940)
Frank (1878-abt 1940)
John (1880-abt 1940)
Ferdinand (1882-abt 1940)
Joseph (1884-abt 1940)
Carl (1886-abt 1940).
I have no further information about any of the children, although I have seen some of the male childrens' names in the City Directories previously mentioned, where they were listed with an occupation at the same address as their father.

The LaCrosse City Directories are available on microfilm through your local Family History Center. The Bureau of Land Management has an online site that can provide information about the deed for the land.

The LaCrosse City Directories of approx 1883-1889 indicate the KOHN=REINERT address was 115 South Nineteenth Street, rather than South Ninth Street. The City Directories also provide a different address for the KOHN=BECKER family (not at hand as I write, but it may have been North Third Street). The KOHN=REINERT address was then on the eastern edge of town, in the 6th Ward. This location might have allowed space for a dairy barn. The City Directory of 1884-85 listed John M KOHN's occupation as "dairy man," and the Wisconsin State Census of 1885 listed his occupation as "milk man." The location of the dairy barn is only a supposition, and I have not yet found any substantiation that John M owned property.

Thank you very much for the further information. Sadly, I have nothing I can contribute at this time. I had only just inferred that the mother of the eleven was named Josephine, courtesy of the cemetary records. You have given me much useful information! If I manage to come up with anything else, I will let you know.

Actually, it has just occurred to me that I have more information on the eleven children, if you have any interest. The LaCrosse public library has been nice enough to put cemetary information online, and I have (theoretically) accurate dates.

Wendy,
I would be interested in correcting the KOHN=BECKER information I have. If for no other reasons than that the supposition that the families are related could eventually be proven, and that others interested in the KOHN=BECKER would profit as well from corrections to the false online information.

Adjusting your information with what is in the LaCrosse public library database of cemetary records...(I'll put mine in brackets):

Joannes KOHN and Josephine BECKER married 18 Sep 1865 USA, Wisconsin, La Crosse county, La Crosse
and had eleven children:
Katherine (1836-abt 1930) [9-18-1866 to 12/25/1949]
Josephine (1868-abt 1930) [11-04-1877 to 11-02-1962]
Charlote (1870-abt 1935) [11-20-1881 to 12-30-1958]
Helen (1872-abt 1935) [1876 to 1929]
Clara (1874-abt 1935) [5-21-1874 to 1-3-1932]
Matt (1876-abt 1940) [If this is Mathias Kohn Jr., then 3-3-1870 to 3-10-1899]
Frank (1878-abt 1940) [6-6-1868 to 9-10-1920]
John (1880-abt 1940) [not found]
Ferdinand (1882-abt 1940) [not found]
Joseph (1884-abt 1940) [3-25-1886 to 11-11-1886]
Carl (1886-abt 1940). [not found]

Given your dates, I think there was much speculation involved and few facts. I should be in LaCrosse in a couple of months, and hopefully I'll be able to check out a few things myself.

Wendy,
Have you made your research trip to La Crosse yet? I travelled there in July 2002, finding quite a lot of information on my ggf John M Kohn, my gg uncle Mathias Kohn and his descendants. I would like to share this and your information about the Helen KOHN=George JOHNSON family.

Thank you for the corrected dates in the Mathias KOHN family. One of the names you gave, Joseph (1886-1886) is not in this family, but in the family of John M KOHN. Joseph's mother, Susanna (1848-1887), is also buried in Catholic Cemetery, beside Joseph.

My current quest is to find information about Michael KOHN, a brother to John M and Mathias, who was born 19 Jul 1844 in Wasserliesch Germany, emigrated from Germany in 1871 or 1872, and who naturalized in La Crosse in 1872. He may have lived there through at least 1876, working as a cabinet maker.
