Is anyone researching Cosgrove’s from Ireland?
My gggrandfather Peter Cosgrove was born c1821 somewhere in Ireland. He married Ann Ward daughter of Thomas Ward and Helen Henry. They left Ireland about 1850 and settled in Lanark, Scotland. Peter died in Lanark in 1878 and Ann also died in Lanark in 1861. Peter and Ann had four children that I know of Catherine (b1839), Peter (b1845), James (b1851) and Thomas (b1853).
If anyone is researching this family I would love to hear from them.

Hi John

I probally can't add a great deal only that they are listed on the 1861 Census Index which if you would like the full transcript you would have to go to scotlandspeople.

It reads however:
Peter Cosgrove, 40, Born: Ireland
Catherine Cosgrove, 21, Born: Ireland
Peter Cosgrove, 16, Born: Ireland
James Cosgrove, 10, Born: Lanark, Lanarkshire
Thomas Cosgrove, 8, Born: Lanark, Lanarkshire.

So this would confirm that Peters wife died before the 7 & 8th April 1861 when the census were done.

I presume too you have these from the 1881 Census?

Well looks a rather hard task you have ahead of your self here:( Did you manage to get Peters wife Ann's death certificate? The only other suggestion would be to check the 1861 Census just in case, by a long shot, that he happen to put where abouts in Ireland he was born. I know thats how I found out with my GG Grandfather.

All the best in your search

Actually just adding to this & not knowing if this might be other brothers of Peters I thought I would list these up to just in case.

There weren't very many Cosgroves on the 1861 Census only actually a few others & families. So if they happen to be Peters brothers & all works out then you might like to look at Monmouth, Ireland OR Co.Monaghan, Ireland. - A big guess i know:)

Thanks for the information Judy; the Cosgrove’s in your first reply are mine, the ones in the second I am not sure of. I already had the information but I appreciate you taking the time to look it up for me. I have the death information on Peter & his wife Ann, but only Ann’s show the parents names. Peter died in the Lanark, Hospital and since none of the family reported the death there are no parents given. I will try your suggestion for Monmouth, Ireland and also Co. Monaghan, Ireland.
This is a long shot, but are you researching Smith’s from Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland?

Thanks again,
John Smith

Hi There,

I noticed you mentioned the name Haughey.

That name came up frequently at my Grandmother,s home.

She lived in the Wishaw area.

There is also a Catherine Cosgrove married to Thomas McGovern. Their son married my Grandfather,s sister Sarah O,neil -

I know there was an Agnes McCulloch who also lived in this area. She could have been born sometime in the 1890,s or so.

This all I have at the moment.

Catherine

Hi Catherine

Thank you so much for the post!:) My Haugheys were from Co.Tyrone, Ireland originally & moved & lived & apparently some still live there today in Wishaw, Glasgow. So I would definitely say it must have been the same lot.

As to Agnes McCulloch I do have a Agnes in the family of John & Mary McCulloch who lived at 10 Grammar School Square, Hamilton, Glasgow. but she was born in 1856 & died in 1858 so to early. Her father John McCulloch died on the 4th Dec 1885 at 39 Sunnyside Rows, Wishaw. Actually in a roundabout way the Haugheys & many other connected families lived in 39 or 51 Sunnyside Rows, Wishaw from 1861 through to 1968 from what I can see.

Agnes could have always been the granddaughter to John & Mary McCulloch.

Interestingly you speak of a Sarah O'Neil. Are you able to tell me a bit more about her?

I have a James McNeil born approx 1834 & married Susan Kerr on the 25 Jan 1864 at the St. Johns Chapel, Portugal Street, Glasgow. James was living at Dale St, Tradeston, Glasgow & Susan was living in King St, Tradeston, Glasgow. James' parents were listed as John McNeil a Farmer who alive at the time of the marriage & Mary McNeil M/s Bowden who was deceased at the time.

Well anything else you can add I would love to hear & if there is anything I can look up on the 1861 Census Index in Glasgow let me know for sure:)

Many thanks
Judy
