My father died when he was about 24 and my grandparents have also passed away. I have been doing some research and everything leads to NM or CO. The oldest relative that I have found was Prisclianno Maestas(not sure of the spelling) which was in the late 1800's. From all my research it looks to me the Maestas derived from the Basque region up in the mountains between Spain and France. Can anyone substantiate this? I currently live in Southern California. My Grandmother Bernice Maestas (martinez-maiden name)died in Carlsbad California and my Grandfather Edwuardo Maestas died in Reno Nevada.
Thanks

Maestas Eugene

I am a Maestas, born in New Mexico. From what I have studied and researched, the Maestas name came from Spain and there are also Maestas's in Greece and France. In the 1700's there was a large Maestas clan in Zacatecas, Mexico. Apparently they were outlaws and fled Mexico and ended up in what is now Northern New Mexico and Colorado. I live in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Maestas is very common in Northern NM and Colorado, but in Southern NM, where it is a rare name. I have traveled throughout Mexico and have not metr anyone with Maestas name. E-mail me if you have questions. My address

Everyone I have talked to regarding the history of the Maestas surname tell me that it came from Basque decent. Do you have any info on this.

Thank you for responding

My family was from the Chama area. My grand-
father lived in a coal-mining village called
Monero-- 16 miles nortwest of Chama. His
brothers and sister were Juan,Sigfredo,and
Piedad Maestas. My grandad was Mestas, but
his brothers went by Maestas. He moved from
Coyote near Abiqui in 1920 to Monero. I also
understand that the surname is from the Basque
country in Spain. Let me know if you have any
other information. Joe Maestas
