Thomas Jefferson Whitfill/Whitfield of KY

I am trying to ascertain whether the mother of Thomas Jefferson Whitfill was Elizabeth Clark or a "Betsy Shaw" as indicated in Thomas Whitfill's death certificate. It seems widely accepted that it was Elizabeth Clark, but I have seen nothing concrete to indicate this. Is there a family Bible record that I don't know about??

Thomas Jefferson Whitfill would be my 3rd Great Grandfather (through his daughter Clara).

Thomas Jefferson Whitfill is my Great Grandfather through his daughter Mary Susan who married Joseph Steve Frank. Robert was married to Elizabeth Clark, His brother Martin B. was married to Rebecca Shaw. Both women probably went by the name Betsy and when Robert's son Thomas Jefferson died his son Angus was the informant and probably just confused the two women. This is all documented information.

This is basically what I have written in the comments section of my tree, but the connection is marked "speculative" until I see something more definitive. Where is it documented?

Thanks

I am a descendant of Martin Gillis Whitfill (borther to Thomas Jefferson Whitfill) and also show his mother as Elizabeth Clark. I believe Martin was their oldest child, he was born in 1829.

I have a question about Martin G. Whitfill. I was told he fought during the Civil War - don't know if it was the Confederate Army or a Kentucky Militia unit. The informant said he served almost the entire war without injury but, after the cease fire while returning home met up with union soldiers and got into a fight breaking his nose. Anyone know of this story. I have not been able to locate any civil war records. I do know this family paid a heavy price for their participation in the war, losing two sons -
James Madison Whitfill and Benedict j. Whitfill.

Hi again. The information is documented in the US and International marriage records 1560 to 1900 as is his brother Martin to Rebecca(Betsy)Shaw. They also both show up on the 1850 census and beyond with their known children. On my tree (Frank Family Tree) I saved a copy of their marriage and attached it to Robert. Hope this is of some help.

I wasn't sure where Martin Gillis' place was in pecking order in te family. Can't tell by the census until 1850 and by then he was not living with the family. I've heard the same stories as you but can't verify or add anything to them. I assume he fought for the Confederacy beause the other brothers did. Are you related to him through the Whitfill side or through his wife? Thomas Jefferson is my Great Grandfather and his youngest daughter Mary Susan married Joseph Steve Frank of Breckinridge Co. and they had my Father, Bernard Woodrow Frank. It's funny how the President names were prevalent in both sides of my family. The Franks had Martin VanBuron and William Radford. I guess they were both very proud and patriotic families. Would love to hear more from you since we are cousins!
