My husband and I are looking for some information on a cemetery in Hardin County ( Elizabethtown ), KY that people refer to as the Gates of Hell. It is at the very end of St. John Rd. and is pretty old. We would like to find out the real name of it and some history on it . If anyone has any info, please let me know. Thanks alot.

Found your message and wanted to post a reply. I've asked some of the locals about this cemetery--also referred to as "The Killing Field"--and gotten several different replies. The consensus is that this cemetery is quite definitely haunted, as the grounds and headstones have been desecrated repeatedly over the years. This very information is blasphemy to any genealogist. Local legend and folklore hint at everything from Satanic rites and rituals to drug busts in the cemetery.

I've spoken to a couple of people who tried to investigate the place after dark, and they claim that a vivid, frightening presence can be felt. They said they didn't last there five minutes. As a teenager in Muhlenberg County Ky, I knew of many such places, and I used to investigate them as a hobby. I am making plans to visit the place for myself. I learned back in those days that sometimes the reputation of a place alone--and the fright of being in such places after dark--is enough to cause people to "see and hear" things. I'd like to know if any of it is true or not.

Perhaps I can get the actual name of the cemetery, and hopefully even pictures. The problem, according to all the colorful folklore, is getting in there safely past both the living and unliving threats! I'll try going in during broad daylight and see if that is more productive.

I ended up getting in touch with the Breckinridge County Archives and getting the records for that cemetery. They had the records from aroud 1985. I still don't have all of them, but will see if your suggestion pans out anything. Thanks for the info.

Just seen your posting on The Gates of Hell,I wondered if you or Angie have done anymore research on the spot. When my children and neices and nephews and other local young people were growing up(many years ago) I heard it mentioned often,It seems it was the place for all the young and brave to go and park and party.I have heard many stories of the place, now that Iam aged and interested in genealogy, although I have never been I would be interested in what you found out and where on St.John's Road it is located.

I along with my son and a friend of his spent an hour or so at this cemetery tonight about 9:00. We could not sense or feel nothing. We did view many stones and I have some on video if anyone has an interest, let me know soon or I will most likely be taping over. Can say many stones were upright and overall in repaired shape, many look fairly well for age of them. Their were however several broken stones and weeds about 3 feet tall along with 1 large downed tree. If I have alreadt recorded over, just let me know and I could possibly go back for another visit as it is within about 25 miles from my home.

Well I went there in broad daylight and I noticed as I walked down the path towards the woods that there was a bunch of charred animal bones and feathers and fur. As I walked into the woods it got EXTREMELY cold. It was so cold I immediatly turned around. It was at least 65 degrees outside but in the woods it felt like 30. I plan to go back at night in about 4 days. Wish me luck. I am taking about 5 friends with me, just to be safe. We are also taking a camcorder and a digital camera! If we get anything good I will post on here!
