Norwegian Family - Karl Martin Petterson Muus Born 1884

Classification: Query
Surnames: Muus, Peterson
Hello, my name is Marlys E. McFerran, memcferran@aol.com, and I am looking for help with my family tree.

I am looking for family history on my grandfather Karl Martin Petterson Muus born in 1884 in Norway. I believe his father to be, Peter Muus. He was my grandfather, but died while I was young. I was always told he was related to Bernt Julius Muus, founder of St. Olaf College, but not sure of the connection. Bernt may have been an uncle or a cousin, just not sure.

I have attached a file showing a primer with names on it. Below are all the details I have.

Norwegian Genealogy Data Collection/Query Form

-Person you are researching
Karl Martin Petterson Muus, in US known as Carl Martin Peterson

-Birthdate and birthplace
Born in 1884 in Norway, Died in Minneapolis, Minnesota in June 1956.

-Person's parents (include names, dates, and places)
From Carl's death certificate it lists his father as Peter Muus and Mothers name as Marie with no last name listed.

-Person's spouse(s) (name, dates, and places)
  Louise M. Brekke Peterson

-Children (names, dates and places)
Palmer Peterson, born in US, probably Minnesota
Mildred Corrine Peterson, born in US, probably Minnesota
Lorraine Constance Peterson, born in US, probably Minnesota

-Specific location(s) where person lived
He lived both in Minnesota and Wisconsin, but at the time of death he lived on 22nd Ave South in Minneapolis, MN . USA

-The resources I have already searched (be specific)
I have tried many online sites, and also the Ellis Island Immigration site. The only record close shows a Karl Peterson who arrived in New York in 1905 at age 18 from Norway. This doesn't give middle name or old city of residence so can't be sure.

-What I would like to find out
I am trying to find his lineage for family records. We had a family book from Norway showing the family history back to the 1600's I believe, but it listed Carl's children's names wrong, and was lost when my mother Mildred, his daughter died. I have what looks like a small Norwegian Bible Primer that shows the following names:
Karl Martin Petterson Muus 1898
Peter Marius Muus 1902

Thank you for reading my post, and any assistance if you can provide it.

To Mr. Brain Gaber, I don't know your background or how you know all this, but I am eternally greatfull. I could not have found all this so quickly without you. My children and I have done a lot of research on their fathers side, but since so much of mine was in Norway, was difficult to find.

I'm curious if you know, is the Martinius Muus listed as my grandfathers' godfather, the one who immigrated to the US in 1905 and the half-brother of Bernt? As you can see our curiousity is endless.

I will also be trying to trace my grandmother, but have much less info on her, so need to do more digging before asking for any help on her. Her family seemed to think she married beneath her when she married my grandfather, so not a lot of info on her

I would love to know your background, and how your able to do this so quickly. It doesn't matter, just curious.

Again, thank you so very, very much. Sincerely, Marlys McFerran

Hi Marlys,
Actually, I had never heard of the family until reading your post. You gave an exact name and a correct date of birth, so it was easy to find the family. I just enjoy doing the research and helping others. I am from Wisconsin, but have been living in Germany since 1974. I also have Norwegian ancestors (as well as English, Belgian and German).

The Muus clan is actually quite large, so it is hard to say if there may be more than one Martinius Muus.
