I have two questions, two things I can't quite read.

First, I can't quite make out what is in the "remarks" column for Johann Jochim Spethmann in this record:

http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/View.aspx?dbid=1638&pa...

Second, I can't quite make out what the occupation is for Johann Jochim Spethman in this record:

http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/View.aspx?dbid=1731&pa...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you, thank you! I wonder why the links don't work? Well, let me attach them. The first is an 1815 census from Lübeck. The third entry from the bottom is for Johann Jochim Spethmann. There is something in the remarks column that I don't understand.

The second is from the 1831 census of Lübeck, again Johann Jochim Spethmann, 4th entry from the bottom, I can't make out what is written for his occupation.

Again, thank you!

The first one:
"bei ihm Spethmann, Joch." - someone by the name of Joch. Spethmann was living with him

The second one:
The best I can make out is "Altbinder" - Binder is a cooper (barrel maker). Usually when the profession is preceded by "Alt" (old) it means someone that repairs but does not make new items.

Hope this helps,

Excellent. Fabulous. There is a tradition in our family that Johann Jochim was a bookbinder. I wonder if this tradition is a distortion resulting from a confusion of the German "Altbinder" with English "binder"?

Anyway, your information helped me find this resource:

Thank you, Klaus, that is extremely helpful!!!

In the census list, it lists the persons in his household. Joch. Spethmann must be someone not directly in the family as the column asks if anyone else in the household resides there.

Thank you!!! Would that possibly include the head of family's father?

Definitely. One would expect children in the list which they provided for as well as other persons to be named.

Let me start again with #1 -
Columns say:

Region or village where they reside - Schönbochen

Occupation or position in where living - Bauerstelle (farmer)

Names of household persons - a couple refers to man and wife - Joh. Joch. Spethmann

Children - none

Servants - one male; one female

Other persons living in household Joch. Spethmann with him.
