The father of the Armstrong Co., Clarion Co., etc. Girts or Girt families seems to have been this Herman Girts. His Will is in Westmoreland Co. Will Book 1:104, as F. Herman Girts. It names his wife Rachel, and sons Henry & John, daughters Susanna & Jenny, will proved March 1793. The land was sold, and the sons moved to Armstrong Co. abt. 1808.
Herman Girts lived at the old area of Barr's Fort, or later known as Gilson's Fort, from the next owners of that land. Henry Girts was an adjoining landowner to the Barr land. Herman had a warrant in 1785 & survey in 1787 for 329 acres.
He is in some early tax records. In 1790, Herman is listed as Girth, not Girt or Girts. His son John is next to him.
Would like to share info with others working on this line. I still do not know where he was prior to Westmoreland Co. He is living there in association with mainly scotch-irish families.
Maybe came from Lancaster or Cumberland Co.??

A Camble Lefever was married to a Jean(Jane?) Girt and living in Westmoreland in1790. Jean was born in Moundsville,WV around1768. Can't connect her with the rest of the Girts. Maybe the family was in WV(VA) before Westmoreland.

Camble Lefever was on 1790 census for Armstrong Township, Westmoreland County. Moved to Belmont, Ohio in 1807 or in that time frame. Married to a Jean Girt. Don't know her connection. Maybe a daughter of John, son of Harmon?

Simplified to save time, this is my possible connection to the line you have posted here.

Contact me if you would like to share information. Herman/Harmon is as far back as I have in my database and I would love to find more history on this family.

Much of my Girt family data was corroborate and enhanced by an Oregon Girt researcher (connects to my bloodline through generation 3). Thanks Eva Jo. :)

I read your posting regarding my Gr. Gr. Gr. Gr. Campbell Lefever. The information regarding Campbell is partially correct. Campbell resided in Westmoreland County. In fact he was in the Westmoreland County Militia during the Revolutionary War. I have not been able to find anything about his wife's maiden name. Other than what is in the message boards. During the war, Campbell was captured by Indians , sold to the British and taken to Quebec. He escaped and returned to Southwest , Pa. I have found Campbell lived in Ohio County, Virginia (WEST VA.) before living in Pultney Township, Belmont County, Ohio. (Proved by his will and land records) I don't feel the information saying Campbell's wife (Jean,Jane, Jenny ) being born in Moundsville, is correct. I am more inclined to think that Jean or Jane Girt Lefever was born in Westmoreland/Armstrong county Pa. I have been sort of half searching my Girt ancestry. Always hoping to find the link that puts Herman and Jane Girt in the same area as Campbell. I have read many postings on these message boards, and have seen a definate pattern of people copying other information and passing it on as truth. The area in Southwestern Pa./Northwestern Va. had boundry disputes between the 2 states. My Merrick and Lefever ancestors had the misfortune of owning land along the border line of these disputes. Records are tough to research. My Gr. Gr. Gr. Grandmother Jean/Jane Lefever was born in Pa. according to the information in the 1850 Census. I am more inclined to think that it was in Westmoreland/Armstrong County. And that Herman and Jean Girt are her parents. I haven't obtained the proof. I have read that Herman and Campbell fought side by side in the war. But I don't have proof. My sister has joined DAR under Campbell Lefever. We want to find proof of possibly Girt, Merrick, and John ancestors in the war. I would appreciate a heading in the right direction regarding Herman and Jean Girt. Thanks

I need to make a small correction. In the bottom section of my previous post, I wanted to write that Herman and Jean Girt were Jean/Jane Lefever's Grandparents. Sorry!

I just read your post while searching for the parent's of my gr x3 grandfather, John LaFever, born 2/1818 or 1819.
He is listed as being born in Virginia, Ohio and was married in 1840 to an Easter McPeek in Guernsey County.
Another family researcher thinks our John is from the line of Campbell and Jean but I have not been able to make that connection. Do you have a complete/correct list of their offsrping with birthdates? Any help would be appreciated.

My John moved to the Knox County area of Ohio sometime after marrying in 1840 and stayed in that area for 100 + years.
