Can anyone identify this uniform? It is my Grandfather as a young man. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 1908. I'm guessing the photo is circa 1920 or so.

Not sure if he is playing 'dress up' or if it's an authentic uniform.

Thanks in advance for your help!

It's an authentic uniform, and it's strange that it's so well tailored and the photo was taken at a studio. It looks like a surplus WW1 US Army uniform, it has some type of cap badge that doesn't appear to be an Army badge-but I can't make it out. Unless the family was wealthy enough to indulge him, I can't see them going to this much trouble as a "dress up" game. It's possible it's a scouting uniform, a messenger or a military school.

Thanks for your reply!

We noticed the cap does not look like a Boy scout hat from that era.
And the badge on his cap seems to be band across it as though he was officially mourning some person.
And no, they were not at all wealthy...

Thanks again,

Mike Orban

It could be a band uniform. Did he play a musical instrument? It could have been a traditional marching band with full insturmentation or just a fife and drum corps organization. Good luck!

Thanks for your response!

I don't know if my Grandfather played an instrument, or if he played in a band.
I never saw him play an instrument anyway.

This is a good thought,
I'll keep it in mind while I'm looking for more information.

Best regards,

Mike
