I too am researching Samuel Bachtel, my great-great grandfather who was married to my great-great grandmother, Mary Rowland. Some additional information about Samuel is below:

1. Samuel was married three times. My great-aunt thought wife #1 was Elizabeth Graybeal (or Grabie), wife #2 was Abigail BAUKUS/BACKUS/BACHUS, and wife #3 was my great-great grandmother, Mary Rowland (sometimes written as Roland or Rolland) Goodenberger).

2. Samuel and Abigail had a son named Jabob I. Bachtel, who married Aletha Triplett.

3. Samuel had one brother, David, and several half-brothers (Same and Jake of Akron, Ohio, and John from Canton, Ohio) and half-sisters. I don't know the names of the half-sisters or if they are related paternally or maternally.

Hello cousin,
Samuel and Elizabeth Graybeal were my great great grandparents. Samuel II was my great grandfather. I did not know about the 2nd wife. My dates for Samuel II B 1847 and Jacob B 1848 must be in error.I have Elizabeth's death 1857. Have not been able to find Samuel I in 1850 census. Marriage date for Sam and Mary 1859. Does your information match this?

There are so many Bachtels in the area hard to find the connection our Sam indicates Baden Germany as birth place. Most of the others have Maryland or Penna. Family stories have him coming to Ohio with three brothers but I have never been able to confirm this.

Love to share informton with you. Contact me at jaswalcy@aol.com.

Hi Sue. To answer your questions...

My records indicate your great-grandfather, Samuel II, was born 7 Jan 1845 in McDonaldsville, Stark County, Ohio; his brother Jacob was born circa 1848; and their mother, Elizabeth Graybeal, died in 1856.

I also haven't been able to find Samuel I in the 1850 census.

Samuel I and Mary Rowland were married 20 Dec 1859 in Stark County, Ohio.

My father was told Samuel I was born in Germany (Baden) and was a doctor. I don't know if that information is accurate or if it has been handed down through the family by word-of-mouth as based on the information recorded in the 1880 Census. It does conflict with he 1860 census where "S. Bachtel" (in some records he's recorded as "J. Bachtel"), his wife Mary, their sons, and Mary's children from her marriage to Jacob Goodenberger were living in Jackson Township, Stark County, Ohio. S. Bachtel's occupation was listed as farmer, so I really don't know what he did for a living.

I also have heard the story about Samuel coming to Ohio with brothers and/or half-brothers but can't confirm the information.
