I have tried to research Benjamin Franklin Jiles born @ 1844 in South Carolina/Georgia. There are only 2 Benj F. Giles in Ga. in the 1860/70's ; one is in Carroll county and the other is in Murray county (1860). None in 1850's in Ga. In York county, S.C. in the 1850's there is a Benj F. Giles but can't find him later. In the 1840 & 1850's there is a Wiley Giles. Could this be the same family? Could anyone help me with this, please.

Bill,

If you are the son of William Lovell Jiles and Louise Weeks,
I was in touch with you over a year ago. It is nice to see you are interested again/still.

At this time, I am trying to document the speculation that Jeremiah was the father of Wiley.

Hope the following helps...

#1) UNKNOWN Jiles
#2) Wiley Giles

#2) Wiley Giles
b. 1800-1810, d. ______
m. Martha UNKNOWN
b. 1800-1810, d. _____ (See Notes)

Notes:
1830 Spartanburg Co., SC:
Page 251-Wiley Giles, 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-30, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20-30.
Page 251-Reubin Giles, 1 male 20-30, 3 females under 5, 1 10-15 and 1 20-30.

1840 Spartanburg Co., SC:

Page 164, Reuben Giles, 4 females under 5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 30-40, 3 males 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 40-50.

1850 Cass Co., GA,12 Division, Oct 9, 1850, HH 1102/1154, Wyly Giles 53, farmer, NC, Martha 41, NC, Louisa 19, [male] John (I or J) 18, Wm P. 15, NC, Reubon 13, [male] GA, Williamson 12, GA, Jones 10, GA, Harrison 8, GA, Doctor [male] 6, GA, Jane 3, GA

1860 Murray Co., GA, Pg 062, Rock Creek, HH 422/414, Wiley Giles, age 67, farm laborer, born SC, Lafayette Giles, age 6, born GA, Benjamin Giles, age 15, farm laborer, born GA.

Although unproven, it is believed at this time that Wiley, Reuben, and William were brothers.

It is believed that Wiley Giles was the father and Martha was most likely the mother of Benjamin Franklin Jiles. Martha and daughter, Jane, probably died between 1850 and 1860. Both are in the household with Wiley in 1850 but neither are listed with him in 1860.

Doctor listed on the 1850 census is believed to be “our” Benjamin Franklin. He was known as “Dock” by his contemporaries.

More Notes for Wiley Giles:
William Franklin Jiles’ (son of Benjamin) death certificate list Dock Jiles as his father. His mother’s name listed unknown. It was signed by William’s son, John Benjamin “J.B” Jiles,

Cass Co., GA was renamed Bartow Co. in 1861. Benjamin and Sarah are married and in Bartow Co., GA in 1870.

#3) Children of Wiley Giles and Martha UNKNOWN
Louisa, female (listed as male on 1850 census)
John
William P.
Reubon
Williamson
Jones (or James)
Harrison
Doctor (listed as male on 1850 census)
Jane
Lafayette

Notes for Louisa Giles:
Listed as a male on census. I believe that to be an error and she is the same Louisa listed below.
Louisa married Milton Ivey, Oct 28, 1850 in Bartow Co., GA. B.F. Giles listed Milton Ivey as a comrade (in GA if still living) on his pension application.

Notes for William P. Giles:
William P. Giles married Nancy E. Mooney, 12/14/1856, Murray Co., GA.
Source: Early Georgia Marriages.

The following William P. has not been proven as same William P. above.

1880 Godfrey, Madison Co., IL, William P. Jiles, age 44 farmer, born SC, father and mother born SC, Elizabeth, wife, age 39, keeping house, born GA, father born AL, mother born GA, Lemuel, son, age 22, born GA, barber, William, son, age 19, born GA, coal minor, Lathy, son, age 14, born IL, at home, Lizzy, daughter, born IL, at home & school, Edward, son, age 9, born IL, at home & school, Fred, son, age 4, born IL, at home, Julius, son, age 2, born IL, at home.

Notes for Harrison:
1860 Murray Co., GA, Pg 083, Holly Creek, Henry H. Giles, age 18, born GA, farmer in household of George Jones, age 27, born GA, Mary E., age 28, born GA, William T., age 4, born GA, Clementine, age 2, born GA, Julia Ann, age 1/12, GA.

Possibly, Harrison age 8, in the1850 census is Henry H. age18, in the1860 census.

Any additions or corrections will be appreciated...

Sounds like we have documentation that Wiley was Benjamins father...
Charmain we need to go to Ft. Worth to the National Archives and see if we can get more information
Tomorrow I am going to look in my information and see if I can find him among the Cherokee's....
The census takers often spelled names the way they sounded...
If his birth name was Wa li he could have pronounce Wa sort A and li with the i sounding like a long e.
In Cherokee li is pronounce LE..and NC and SC and Ga were Cherokee territory.
According to my grandmother, Emma Dell (my mother) often talked of being a Cherokee Indian.. when I met Ruel, he also mentioned it. At the time I was in awe that I was actually talking to an Uncle on the Jiles side.
