Re: Howard Hudson, Detroit, Wayne Co., MI
Hello again. This is my 2nd post/reply. Need information: why was the marriage considered illegal in New Jersey, that they were compelled to marry again in Michigan? Thanks. Janis Rozich.

Thank you for taking the time to look up and post this information.
Howard Hudson was apparently into remaking himself to fit any occasion. He married:
11 Oct 1888 in Washington DC Henry HUDSON Jr. res. Baltimore, MD birthplace New Orleans, LA to: Marie POSTON res. Washington, DC birthplace Virginia by: Samuel W. Haddaway, Minister of the Gospel
14 Jul 1897 in Baltimore, MD PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER - Married HAINES-FRANCK - On July 14, 1897 at the residence of the bride's parents, Baltimore, MD, by the Rev. J.M. Zimmerman, Minnie L. FRANCK to Howard HAINES of New York.
9 Jul 1899 in Delanco, NJ Howard HAINES age 42 Boston MA to Mary L. FENTON 29 Bridgeboro, NJ July 9, 1899 Rev. Geo. Whitfield; Witness Jean Russell
By newspaper accounts, he forgot to divorce the first wife before marrying the second and third.
Minnie FRANCK (the second wife and mother of Gwendoline HAINES), died 21 Apr 1899 NJ of Septicemia.
Gwendoline HAINES b. Jun 1898 MD d. 31 Mar 1901 NJ.
Howard and Mary's second child, Gladys HAINES b. 12 Aug 1901 NJ, lived in NJ and was raised by her grandmother Mary Ann BUZBY/FENTON and appears there in the 1910 census.
Howard and Mary, with their son Howard Jr, left NJ in Apr 1902, moved to Ohio and then Detroit and somewhere along the way changed their last name from HAINES back to HUDSON.
At this point, I still have not found any document to confirm the year and place of Howard's birth or if his original name was actually Henry HUDSON.
Regards, JC Henry

This is great site and I have used it for other MI relatives, but records only go to 1920, Howard d. 1929. I have not found any MI death records online after 1920.

That's correct. You will need to order a death cert. from Detroit. Q. Where do I go to get a birth certificate or death certificate? A. The Detroit Health Department, Vital Records Division, Herman Kiefer Health Complex, 1151 Taylor (zip 48202-1732) near the John C. Lodge expressway. The phone numbers are 313-876-4049 [recorded message] and 313-876-4133. Person must have died in Wayne County, Michigan & within the city limits of Detroit. Cost is $20.00. Call first before ordering as pricing may have changed. Hours are 8 – 4pm Eastern time SHARP Mon - Fri. FREE parking. Cash, certified check, money order are accepted. Phone lookups will not be done. A walk-in service is available. Public browsing of the records is not permitted. Make payment to – City of Detroit. DO NOT REQUEST A DEATH CERT. FOR A MARRIED WOMAN USING HER MAIDEN NAME. When I visited the City of Detroit vital records office 2 weeks ago, the clerk was very helpful. She located and made a copy of a 1960 death cert. But she could not find ones for 1954 & 1967. She confided to me that most of the older death certs were boxed up last year for a planned move to a new location. However the move never happened and it is unlikely that it will ever happen. The clerk told me that the best option if you want a cert older than 1970 is to order it from the State of Michigan. This would definitely be true for a death in 1929, as Detroit has not held those records for several years. The web site for the State is http://www.michigan.gov/mdch/0,1607,7-132-4645---,00.html (VitalChek will cost more than going directly to the State, but you will have the record in a couple of days.)

Re: Howard Hudson, Detroit, Wayne Co., MI
Did U go to the records office at Herman Kiefer Hospital?
Never use a 3rd party for death records. As you might receive an abbreviated copy of the cert.

Re: Howard Hudson, Detroit, Wayne Co., MI
Herman Keifer doesn't have death records this old. They send you to the State of Michigan Community Health Department. They don't bother to let you know this until you show up down there, like I did last summer, looking for a death certificate from 1924. Urg.
