Does anyone know the name(s) of the original group(s) of Native Americans who inhabited Accomack? I have read much info re: Accomack, but have yet to come across the name(s) of the original inhabitants.

Thank you.

Hi Hetty,
The Indians were part of the Powhatan Confederacy across the Bay, but because of distance were autonomous. This list of tribes is from "Over On the Eastern Shore" by Henry Wise.
-Magothas (off Magothy Bay)
-Mattawames, under King Pomoccomon (at Hungar's Neck)
-Nussawattocks, under King Tepiapon (at Elliot's Neck)
-Accohanocks (at Occohannock Creek)
-Curratocks, under King Andiaman (at Craddock Creek)
-Pungoteagues (on Pungoteague Creek)
-Anancocks, under King Ekeeks (at Onancock Creek)
-Chesconnessex, under King Nowmetrawen
-Gingoteagues, under Parahokes (at Chincoteague)
-Asseateagues
-Kickotanks
-Matchateagues
-Matomkins
-Matchipungoes
Hope this is helpful.

Do you have any surnames associated with these tribes?

Hi Phyllis.
from what I remember there were no surnames among the tribes. However I do recall reading the court records from the 1600's (in themselves very entertaining) and noticing how a few of the Native American children assumed the surname of those to whom they were indentured. Some tribal leaders are mentioned by name in court records, none with surnames.

Does anyone know whether Elizabeth Woodman, wife of John Stockley, was Native American?

Surnames: Cherricks
My Great Great Grandmother was Sooloney Cherricks. I have been told she was either full or part Native American. She was born on Chincoteague Island. Her father was Joshua Cherricks and her mother was Elizabeth Jester.

I can not find the Native American Connection at all!
