Surnames: Swan, Disney
Hi!
I'm looking for information on one of my ancestors, Maria Swan Disney (1814-1896) and Edmond Swan, both of Kilkenny. (She is the great-grandmother of Walt Disney.) I am specifically looking for info pertaining to their childhood and their Irish ancestors.

Thanks in advance!

Wow, who would of thought.

You can look up information with various sources:

Kilkenny is part of a irish history foundation that has baptism and marriage records, if records survived you should be able to find them on www.rootsireland.ie

Griffith Valuation is now used as a census substitute as there are no complete census till 1901.
Look at www.askaboutireland.ie

The earliest census substitute is the Tithe Applotments: www.genealogy.nationalarchives.ie

www.census.nationalarchives.ie 1901-1911

www.igp-web.com + County
www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom+Ireland+County

I will look further as I have a program that might give more than the above sources.

The majority of people in Ireland were farmers, and farmer labourers, probably more than 85%. There was little outside employment as Ireland was not resource rich. There was some mining, some people would be trades people, shops and pubs, doctors etc. If Maria stayed in Ireland of course she would have lived through the earlier famines and great famine.

There are several sources that will give you information about the counties. Eneclann and Four Courts Press have books that are county specific as well as other bits and bobs.

Griffith Valuation took place in Kilkenny in 1849: There are 14 occupiers of land with the surname
Disney, some are repeated. Kepple x 5; Henry x 2; Robert; James x 2. The landlord's name, size of property and neighbours are shown.

They are in only these parish's Rathbeagh, St. John & St. Mary, Balleen these parish's are
all in the Poor Law Union of Kilkenny (no more than 12 mi. from Kilkenny City)

www.askaboutireland.ie

Eg:

Kepple Disney, Parish of Rathbeagh, Townland Clone, Poor Law Union Kilkenny
#5 land 33 acres 1 rood and 20 perches

4a William Delaney house and land, tenant of Jane Phelan
4b Jane Phelan tenant of Edmond Swan, land share with Wm. Delaney 2.0.28
.............................................................................................................................................................................
Henry Disney, Parish of Rathbeagh, townland Rathbeagh, PLU Kilkenny, tenant of James Dunphy
#8 house, outbuildings land 4.0.13

Edmond Swan, Parish of Rathbeagh, Townland Rathbeagh, tenant of James Dunphy

#7a house, outbuildings and land 59.1.11
#7b John Joyne, tenant of Edmond Swan - house

1824 & 1846 Directories are on www.failteromhat.com (I have 1870, 1881, 1894)
farmers don't appear till 1881/1894.

Parish Rathbeagh is also known as Bannagh or Castledough

There is an irish history foundation with baptism and marriage records:www.rootsireland.ie
St. John RC 1780-1910
St. Mary RC 1754-1910

www.census.nationalarchives.ie 1901/1911

www.igp-web.com + county

There are no Disney's in the phone book for Kilkenny but 4 show in Dublin. Disney's did lived in Dublin in 1849 as well as several other counties. There are 2 Swan's listed in Kilkenny. If you want to know more about Maria Swan you could try writing them. Although they have the same surname it doesn't mean that stories have been handed down but worth a try. The addresses given are sufficient
for mail delivery
