Hi Jim, I noticed your enquiry about the Carew name, sorry I cannot help you but thought I would contact you just in case you have some other information. I have just found out I have some kin on the borders of Devon and Cornwall. England, a place called "Landulph" the population was/is very small, I have a family with the surname of Peters and two of the children have a middle name "Carew" which probably means it is a family name. My direct line is from a Harriet Carew Peters baptised 12 Oct 1823, Landulph.Cornwall. father was James Peters and Mary? someone told me there had been a Lord Carew in this general area? Good Hunting. Jane.

Dear Carol,

Thankyou for your letter, sorry not to have written sooner, yes my Harriet Carew Peters was born abt. 1823 in Landulph, her parents were James Peters & Mary Jenkins,

this was a fairly large family with about 12 children.

My Hariet Carew Peters married a George Titmuss who was actually born in Hertfordshire but joined the Royal Artillery and was staioned in the Plymouth Barracks...

They got married at the Plymouth Register Office 10th August 1862, she gave her address as 1, Wyndham Street, Plymouth....I should have been able to find her on the 1861 census but I cannot seem to locate her at all, I would certainly be interested where she was if you are ever looking at the 1861 census perhaps you could look out for my Harriet Carew Peters.

Of course I do not know where the Carew came from....

Best Wishes.

Jane.

.P.S. I was born in England but now live in Australia...

Dear Carol,

Thankyou for your letter, we live in Melbourne, in the Eastern suburbs, how come you have been here on and off, was it work related perhaps?

Thanks for looking out for my Harriet Carew Peters on the 1861 she is a bit of a mystery woman, I still cannot find her death but her husband remarried in 1874, she just vanished, because her husband was in the R.A. they travelled about quite a lot and she just vanished while on the Island of Alderney, they had been stationed there during the late 1860's....poor Harriet.

Best Wishes.

Jane.

Dear Carol,

I was just about to log off when your reply came through, perhaps email me some time.

Yes I know what it is like to be homesick, I am really the only one who has not settled, we arrived here in 1967, I wish I could afford a yearly visit to the old country, I need it.

Thanks for the offer to track down my Harriet Carew Peters, I think she has just got lost, or maybe died on Alderney, the only other thing I know it that the R.A. regiment left Alderney, I have details of that somewhere, and I am wondering if she died on board or something...

Stay in touch.

Jane.

I am a Carew descendant and I have been looking through the old message boards. I noticed your inquiry from 18 Feb 2001. You have probably (hopefully) found the Agnes or Lillian Carew by now, but I wanted to note what is probably a curious coincidence. My grandmother was Mary Agnes Carew, 6 Nov 1893, in Massachusetts USA, but her family of Carews were English, descended from John Carew in Devon, but then living in St. John's Newfoundland. Her older sister was Lillian Carew, born in the 1880s in St. John's. Their father, Martin Carew was sea captain sailing out of St. John's with frequent trips to England. Probably just a coincidence, but I thought I would pass this on.

Thank you for replying - but my Carew's are definately from Ireland (near Cork)
They were part of the Peter Robinson Settlers of 1825 (over 2000 Irish poor immigrants) - brought here to Canada under a very well documented government assisted program) They settled near what was then known as Peterborough, Ontario, Upper Canada.
As far as I know they are not connected to the Carew's of Newfoundland either - although am well aware there seems to be lot's of Carew families there also.
And also don't have an Agnes or Lillian Carew in my database.
Sorry - but good try - keep trying - you never know where you might find something.
